Yesterday was a beautiful day here in PA, so we decided it would be fun to take the 4 week old chicks and ducklings outside to let them forage in the grass. I had some pallets sitting around, so I made a makeshift cage to keep them in while we were out there watching them. I had to put some scrap wood on the bottoms of some of them, as they could easily squeeze through. We had them outside for a while and they were having a grand time. When I noticed they were chilling out and cuddling I decided to take them back in because I didn’t want them to get cold. So, I got into the pen with them and was proceeding to put them in the storage bin so my daughter could carry a couple of them at a time back to the brooder. Well, I no sooner would get one in the bin and turn around to pick up another, than the first one would jump out. That got all of the others excited and they started trying to escape. At one point, we had 4 chicks and one duck escape. My 9yo daughter and my 68yo MIL were outside of the pen trying to catch the escapees, I’m inside trying to keep the others from getting out, my Corgi is outside chasing around the chicks and duckling with my daughter and my MIL. My daughter is squealing and laughing hysterically, my MIL is frantic, the dog is having a good time, the chicks in the pen are chirping like mad-men and the one lone duckling in the pen is screaming bloody murder, trying its hardest to get out with its pal.
We finally got them rounded up and back in the brooder.
Within minutes they were cuddled up sleeping. Apparently escape attempts tucker babies out…lol.
