Adventures in Incubating Shipped Eggs

Update day14 all 12 still have moving chicks inside. Air cells look good on 7, 5 air cells are really bad saddles. They look like an Day 20 aircell that has drawn down. I have them up in cut down carton, is there anything I can do to help at this point? I’m considering stop tilting them now to give them extra days to get into position. Anyone stop turning at day 15?

That's a good question. I'm not sure what to do about my big saddle egg either.

I've seen advice to stop turning a few days early for bantam eggs, since they allegedly can hatch early. With my saddle cell eggs, I've turned them until Day 18, and generally had good results, although I did have to assist a few chicks.

I think if you want to stop turning early, that will be fine.

Per the Dept of Embryology, University College, London:
"turning is more important in early than in late incubation. For example, Byerly & Olsen (1936) conclude that turning in the third week probably has little effect on hatchability."

I had similar thoughts. They only took 24 hours to get here, but based on the number of saddles and blood rings, I think they had a rough ride.

The good news is that I called around and there is a feed store 2.5 hours from where I live that are getting buff orpington chicks in on June 1, which is 2 days after my expected hatch. If I don't get the numbers I'm looking for, I will drive over and supplement the hatch with the necessary amount of chicks.

I WILL get orpingtons. I will NOT be denied.

I feel better now.

First chick has popped its shell. A little light colored Serama hatchling. The rest haven't changed - one pip in the Tiny egg, eleven that haven't pipped that I can see.
Maybe the first one hatching will spur the others on.

Hope there's pictures coming. :D

Normally, there'd be photos for each chick... but my camera broke, and the replacement is proving to be worthless.
