Adventures in Incubating Shipped Eggs

Pics
When are they due to hatch? I love pictures of Serama chicks. :love

They're due the 19th or 20th. If you click my 'coop' link, you can see photos of the four I hatched a month ago - I set it up to show development progress, with pictures every two days. Unfortunately, while taking yesterday's pictures, my camera died an ignoble death... and I don't have a backup.

Hi all, I will be joining your hatchalong soon with quail eggs! Gonna try hatching some shipped eggs that arrived late, cracked shipped eggs and grocery store eggs. Will be surprised if anything hatches ;)

Does it matter if I have the eggs sitting pointy side down in the incubator or is lying on side the best way to hatch?

@soEggciting Welcome from New Orleans! I am interested in seeing if grocery store eggs hatch and what you get! :clap

Well, it really depends on what grocery store and what eggs. I know of some people that hatched some no cage trader joe eggs and about 30% hatched lol

As for lay down or point side down, that is personal preference. Either way they need to be turned at least 3 times a day.

I’m about certain you cannot hatch grocery store eggs...they are egg layers in mass production and never get mated
Ack, sorry - forgot to mention - quail eggs. ^^ I hear sometimes a male might be with layers since some are hard to tell apart. Also, some Trader Joe's sells fertile eggs that people have hatched leghorns from on occasion, I might try that after this batch :)

Thank you! This hatch will be with quail eggs from an asian market. Afterwards I'll try Trader Joe's fertile or brown eggs from asian market (the asian market eggs aren't labeled as fertile or free range, just eggs placed in plain cartons secured with rubber bands, we've cracked some eggs open with half developed embryos before so guessing they're housed with wandering roos).

Sorry about your camera. I looked at your coop pictures and they are adorable!

If I had a bigger incubator, I would have definitely thrown in a carton of fertile supermarket eggs. I've always wanted to try that. I hear the key is looking for one that are less than 2 weeks from the pack date.
