You very, very gently lower the egg into a small (clear) glass of 100 to 105 degree water. If there is something alive in there, the egg should move in jerky motions. The only times I've candled, mine were still -- it only takes a few seconds for the water to get calm, and there were no ripples or motion of any kind. All were dead when I opened them. I don't love the idea of dropping an egg in water, so I only do this as a last, and final resort before discarding an egg.
