You very, very gently lower the egg into a small (clear) glass of 100 to 105 degree water. If there is something alive in there, the egg should move in jerky motions. The only times I've candled, mine were still -- it only takes a few seconds for the water to get calm, and there were no ripples or motion of any kind. All were dead when I opened them. I don't love the idea of dropping an egg in water, so I only do this as a last, and final resort before discarding an egg.

I think it just seems crazy.

I think I am going to try it will my quail egg.

On the incubation front, things are at a bit of a frustrating standstill over the last few hours. In one egg, the pip has gotten a little bigger. The other two look pretty much the same since early this morning. No new pips. I did hear a flurry of peeping about an hour ago, and saw a bit of movement at the largest pip hole.

It's not even Day 21 yet officially, so I'm trying not to worry. I'm assuming some of the early pippers just need some more quality time in the egg to get the yolk absorbed. :fl

I'm really anxious to see a chick!
 
I hatched the chicks in the incubator, then put them under my broody, "Blondie." This is the second batch of chicks she has fostered. If they hadn't been shipped eggs, I would have put the eggs under her. She is a good mama, she sat for 25 days on a fake egg, HAH! I expect that, like last time, her sister "Brownie" will decide after a few days that she wants chicks too, and they will co-brood the chicks. Brownie is a so-so broody, I wouldn't put valuable eggs under her.
