Adventures in Urban Chicken Keeping on the Left Coast (aka Chooksworth)

Yeah, the entire dirt patch in my yard is barely 250 sq ft. I'm going to expand with raised beds and pots on the cement patio areas.

Well something attempted to gnaw its way into the run last night...fun with urban predators.

So my trip to the store for racoon-proofing supplies turned into a minor garden shop. What can I say, it's 71° in January. I'm feeling inspired.

Busy day. Cleaned the coop (easy and fast; coop didn't smell at all, but there was a lot of poo). Refreshed the dust bath. Moved all the plants up into the yard so I can start playing with layout. Found the garden hooks I bought years ago in the garage and used them to help support the Omlet fencing. That's $50 I don't have to spend on a second set of Omlet poles.

Clancy sunning himself and ignoring the chooks like a good boy.

Garden hooks put to good use.

Saw a small rodent of some kind dash across my run this morning. Spent the afternoon making wire "bumpers" for the door to keep them out.

Shingles for my nest box arrived. Guess that means I should put it together this weekend ... Then maybe I can install it sometime in February. Still debating the best way to open up the side of the coop for this (carefully remove the siding vs. use a sawzall to open up a hole).

Made 6" flock blocks last night. Hung one up this morning. We'll see how it fared when I get home.
