Adventures in Urban Chicken Keeping on the Left Coast (aka Chooksworth)

Well, Venetia (who'd only been broody a week) did NOT accept the chick swap. She clearly wanted the chicks, but then she would peck at them when they came to her, so they hid under the other two broodies. I moved the moms and babies down into the secure run under the loft section of the coop and gave them a big nesting box with curtains and lots of straw. They all settled in just fine as one communal group (Phoebe and Babs just seem to be sharing all six chicks and co-parenting the brood). Venetia went back to her nest. I got some fertile eggs from the store yesterday and gave six of them to Venetia, which made her VERY happy. We'll see how that goes. Per their Julian date, they were just laid on the 17th, so hopefully they'll be viable. If not, I'll get her some chicks in a couple of weeks and try again.

Babs (blue) and Phoebe (black) with the chicks hanging out on the "patio" outside their nest box.

Sylvester coming over to check in on what's going on back there.
