In July, one of our zebra finches got caught in her nest material and died, and her mate died for an unknown reason the next day.
A few weeks ago, one of our white zebra finches was acting strange; she was puffed up all the time, and at first we thought she wanted to sit on eggs. Then we noticed that she was always sleeping with her head in her back during the day and she just got worse and worse. The feathers around her butt were yellow colored(maybe from diarrhea?) and soon she was having trouble staying on the perch. We put the food and water where she could reach it. Soon, if she fluttered to the bottom of her cage, she couldn't fly back up. We had to pick her up and place her in her food dish because she couldn't sit on the perch without falling off. We had no idea what was wrong with her. Sadly, one day she got too weak to open her eyes. She sat in her nest with her eyes closed, and started twisting her neck back as if she was in pain. It was really sad to watch but we didn't know what to do to help her. She finally died in her nest at the end of the day.
Her mate, Beeky, is still alive today. He is healthy and active, so whatever was wrong with his mate was not contagious. Maybe was she egg bound? Or some other disease? We also have Parakeets and they are all healthy and active.
Any thoughts? (and sorry if this is not the right forum)
Thanks!
