that's good to hear about the little one! Keep trying for the other two. Hopefully they will get hungry and open their beaks.

Thanks for all your help! The two larger ones never let me feed them, but the temperature is starting to improve so I put them back in their nest. Unfortunately I could only reach one of the two nests so all three had to go in that one and I'm crossing my fingers that the parents accept them all in spite of the extra baby and scent of sweaty human... The most talkative of the larger chicks is chirping up a storm in the nest and the parents have chirped back from nearby but not gone to the nest yet.

Glad to know the scent won't be an issue. I'll try to check on them in the morning, but the nest is pretty high up so I won't be able to see in very well. I could barely reach to get the chicks back into the nest!

Sorry for the slow reply, it's been hard to check on them since they're so high up. I've been keeping an eye out below the nest and hadn't seen any jumpers so I was hopeful.

Then just now I was working in the barn and heard a ruckus of finch chick chirping. I stuck my head out and spotted the mama finch feeding at least two finch chicks based on the hungry little heads visible over the rim of the nest. I'm hopeful that the third chick is still in there too based on the sheer amount of noise that they were making . I tried to catch a video but she was done by the time I grabbed my phone...

Thanks again for all your help in keeping these little friends alive! Cooler temps forecasted for the next week by which point the older two should be getting close to ready to fly anyway .

With summer coming up again in your part of the world, it would be a good idea to mount a suitable ledge or two for the birds to nest on in a shady spot or two. Then, with luck, this problem will not reoccur. Or if it does, you can just make a nest and put the chicks in it in this more suitable spot. The parents will, hopefully hear their chicks calling and relocate. Experience has taught me that about half will and half won't. But it is worth trying.
