Advice needed for Rescued Hen

Granny, having a look at the workings of this site I wondered if you would be OK for me clicking the 'follow' button against your profile, I would like your OK to do so first before I proceed, my old fashioned manners kicking in, is polite to ask first as you might not want me to follow you as a friend on this site.

Thanks Heaps

Hi Granny, I have just finished speaking with the SPCA, they apparently get a huge number of calls about the chickens that are left out there. The SPCA goes up there to catch them every few weeks, five were caught yesterday, but then some more ignorant humans come along and add to the population, perpetuating a never ending cycle. Apparently there is a water trough that those chickens can get to on the other side of the bush backing onto farmland, and there are loads of caring people that go out there and feed them with appropriate food, so they are not completely forsaken. Between the SPCA and the Local Council though there is nothing else they can do as chickens are not covered in law. My own opinion is that every animal should be covered by laws of protection. I really hate it when people say 'dumb animals', no animal is dumb, in fact it would be us humans that are as we are not making anywhere near enough effort to understand them.

I have doused Dotty with DE this morning, she then did a full stand up on her feet with a big stretch and flapped her wings, GO DOTTIE, and when I put her on the kitchen floor she walked straight towards where our cats feed bowls are, now that's what I like to see some fighting back, joy. She is busy giving herself a preen right now, little by little her character will begin to shine through, she has some strength now to allow her to do so, whew.

I can't seem to say thank you enough for your concerns and assistance, from so very far away my heartfelt thanks.

Kindest Regards to You.
Elaine

Awesome thank you Granny, the follow button is clicked and I love the name 'Granny's gone and done it', I can see this site is going to take up a lot of my time, so much info and good people to talk to. I have in the past through previous employment been criticized for my good manners, but it is something that has stuck with me from when I was raised by my Foster Parent's for seven years, very much upper middle class British, however my family history is poorer working class, Welsh Tenant Farmers on my Mother's side, over 600 years by the family tree, and Dad's side was well, me thinks they were the original 'squatters' in the early 1900's, very poor people, my Dad's Mum would frequently have to send her five children to bed hungry and they would break into run down abandoned properties in the countryside of Devon, I never met my Dad's folks but it had to have been a most awful thing to not be able to feed your children.

Anyway I hope that gives you a little insight into who I am, I do have a small mantra to kind of explain where I come from and it is this: 'I went from a home where the man of the house had one off the rack suit to a home where the man of the house had a walk in wardrobe of hand made suits', yes I was lucky and I thank my lucky stars daily that there was two people who wanted to help a ten year old waif and stray, I have frequently in my adult years thanked them for their teachings.

Thank you again Granny for becoming mine and Dottie's friend, I look forward very much to seeing what you guys talk about and maybe I might have a small contribution to make from time to time.

Talk to you again soon, enjoy your evening? time zone confusion, it is 12.44pm here, so I am speaking to you from your future, lol.

Regards
Elaine

it is a Cinderella story.

Hi Elaine from Auckland. So glad to hear Dottie is on the mend.I was given Panacur from my vet for chickens.White slightly viscous liquid.I put the dose on a little square of Vogels bread.Went down a treat. Vet said almost impossible to overdose.Glad the SPCA is on the case.Pity they have to though. People are so ignorant arn't they? There was a similar problem up here for years at Albany.People visiting the cafes thought it was ''cute'' and no doubt fed them all types of unsuitable food.Thank you for all you are doing. I don't know if you belong to Trademe but various poultry tonics available on there. Kind Regards Penny.

Hello Penny, so cool to find someone else on this site from NZ, we were in Auckland up until ten years ago when my Mother In Law succeeded in her persuasion for us to move to New Plymouth, she and hubby have been here for twenty years, so glad that we made the move.

I did not realise that this chicken dumping business was so rampant, I am really upset about it.

Yes we are registered with Trade-Me, so will peruse the site in the coming days for all things related to chickens.

I have not managed to get out to our vet today, I received news a few hours ago of a death in the family, but I appreciate that you are able to tell me of something that I can get hold of from the vets here in NZ, I will get onto it though, just in a bit of shock right now, as you do.

I fully intend to get hubby to take a photo of Dottie soon, I am not very clever with the IT technical side of things, uploading photo's etc, he is my tech guru, I can't half be dense when it comes to that sort of thing, lol.

Dottie has had the best day today, the first good day of the rest of her life, very much a different hen to this time last week,

Hi Elaine. Just wanted to say I was so moved by this thread, and thank you for rescuing Dottie. I am so happy to see that she is improving.

Elaine,
You are a Saint, a Hero & a Super Human. They say, "You cant save them all" (a reality that I'm still trying to come to terms with) but I commend you for your efforts save the ones you can. Dottie is a very, very lucky girl! Please keep us posted.
