Hello,
Found my 1yo hen near the road unable to walk. Thought maybe her leg was broken so I splinted & taped it but she won’t put weight on it. The leg/foot have what looks like greenish bruising and she kind of keeps it drawn up. I unwrapped it yesterday & it feels warm to the touch. Upon closer inspection I’m almost sure she has bumble foot but I still think she was injured somehow. I’ve kept her isolated & she’s eating & drinking fine & not in distress. Had to wash & dry her bum since she’s not mobile & she was very tolerant. Need to know if I should get antibiotics for her & what else I can do to help her. I know I’ll have to get the infection out of her foot but the scab in the middle is just starting to form. I plan to soak it in epsom salt. Any advice appreciated! 62879938-4289-428D-A501-5A844055AF31.jpeg B0049AC3-AB00-4F58-8DD0-3AD3E1606436.jpeg C8A70389-ACB2-4695-8637-83E1AB0226E5.jpeg

Could she have been hit by a car?

I too seen greenish bruising on the foot. I would say she's injured it somehow. Hard to know if just bruised deeply or fractured. The spot on the bottom of the foot looks like it may be the start of bumblefoot, but to me, it's not a concern at this time. I would leave the spot alone.

Soaking in epsom salts is a good idea. You can try placing her in a sling for short monitored periods of time to get her upright and hopefully she'll stay cleaner.

I just relooked at your photos, does she have bruising (is it green) along the leg as well?

Yes and a tiny bit on the other leg. Some tiny scrapes as well. A car is definitely a possibility but I also wondered if maybe an owl or something got her then dropped her. There’s no obvious fracture, missing feathers or wounds. She’s not curling the foot up as much but still won’t put weight on it. I soaked it in Epsom salt, applied Prid to the bumble & wrapped it last night.

You will want to make sure her legs are not swelling up from the bruising and scrapes, check your wrappings, you don't want those to get too tight and cut off circulation.
The scab on the bottom of the foot is not the reason she's not using the leg and foot.

Swelling is down in the injured foot/leg but now there’s a bumble on the other side & it is swollen & warm to the touch. Soaked both feet in epsom salt, then applied Vetericyn & Prid & loosely wrapped. I know the bumble foot is secondary to the injury but I am worried about the infection spreading. She does seem to be making more effort to stand. Wondering if she needs antibiotics??

Can you get some photos of the "new" bumble? Could it be a scrape or injury of whatever happened to her?

In very advanced cases of bumblefoot, one may need to give an oral antibiotic. If there's no infection, then the medication is not necessary.

The foot/leg originally injured are looking almost normal (1st pic). The other side (2nd & 3rd pics) is bothering her & the bumble is bigger. She is standing more on her own & flapping her wings so I’m optimistic.
