Pepper is a sapphire gem who is 3 and a half years old. She has never laid a soft or mishappen egg in her life. She’s never been egg bound or had any odd egg laying behaviors. She’s molted every year and never been ill. She also lays the smallest, most perfect eggs, mind you she is a large bird; probably 8 lbs.

For the past week she has been off. Not running, isolating, not really eating (will eat some tomatoes, a bit of scratch, some other goodies), but goes to bed with a mostly empty crop. I don’t worry a lot bc she has some extra fat, (she is a large bird). But I will start bringing her mash tonight probably to try to entice her to eat more. She hasnt laid an egg in about a week as well. Her droppings are mostly liquid and tinted yellow. That worries me. Her bottom is messy. Her abdomen isn’t bulgy, maybe a bit fat but definitely not protruding.

I thought maybe she was getting ready to molt because I saw her preen and a neck feather fell out. Then at roost time I ruffled her neck feathers and one fell out. I searched her feathers for mites and noted a few pin feathers on her neck. No mites and no lice on anyone. Although we did have mites at the beginning of this summer.

As this week will start to drag into two weeks, I am beginning to wonder based on her droppings, mostly, if she doesn’t have something reproductive going on, but I don’t want to start an antibiotic unnecessarily. And she just hasn’t had a history of any egg issues pointing to reproductive problems. Although with her breed, I know it wouldn’t be shocking.

I know things get weird right before molting sometimes, too, thought. I guess what I’m asking is how long should I give it before deciding this isn’t molt coming on and starting an antibiotic? I thought by a week she’d surely be dropping more feathers if that was the case but I really haven’t seen but those few.

Pics- it is normal for her comb to flop and be tinted at the end, although it sort of looks like it’s shriveling from one pic to the next:

These droppings didn’t look as yellow, thank goodness

She looks pretty healthy, and a beautiful chicken! It’s normal for chickens to slow down with egg laying when the seasons changing, I don’t know much about the droppings but I looked it up and it could just be because of her diet. Also her eggs are cute! And I love your nails :)

Oh thank you for your response. And thank you for the compliment on my nails and on her. She is one of my favorite chickens, next to my Ravioli, of course, so I’m probably worrying more than I should.

But the behaviors I’m seeing her exhibit I haven’t seen with a chicken going into molt before. The way she isn’t running is sort of odd. It makes me wonder if her abdomen hurts or something. I have another molting right now and she doesn’t act like this. Something just seems off. I could be overthinking I guess.

On the bright side I did get her to eat some mash and raw egg tonight. I think I’ll just keep watching her. Thanks again for your kind words.

If she has pin feathers coming out in the crease between her thigh and belly, she may not want to run bc they are pokey and uncomfortable. Molting chickens can be as crabby as a baby cutting teeth! They don't want to held and can even scream at other chickens who dare to invade their personal space.

Maybe that is it. I hope that is it. She was super loud and grumpy when I tried to pick her up the other day. I thought it was a bit more than usual and attributed it to her not feeling well, which would be accurate in the case of molting, too.

I hope I’m just reading too much into things. Thank you :)

Pretty girl!

Likely she's going into molt, but it won't hurt to give her a little TLC is she's agreeable.

I have 1 SG left and she's not molting yet, but her production is slowing a bit, so I figure she's going to start soon.

Thank you, this is reassuring. Really all signs point that direction, I'm sure I’m just being crazy because she is a favorite. Now that I’ve posed it to the world that I am worried about her she will make me look stupid and drop every feather she owns tomorrow.

I think sapphire gems are some of the most beautiful, great temperament, underrated chickens. I wish they were made to live a bit longer.
