I bought six Jersey Giant hatching eggs online, all were fertile but only one went full term and little 'Jet' came into the world just ten minutes ago. He pipped at the wrong end of the egg at about 4 o'clock this morning. It is now 10.30pm and I had to help him out of his shell as he was becoming very weak and I was afraid of losing him overnight. He is chirping very loudly but only occasionally and seems to be sleeping after his traumatic day.

I was extremely careful about helping him, went very slowly, watching for veins and being very aware that rushing him out could result in a bleed or unabsorbed yolk.

Well, we didn't get any bleeding but he does have a sliughtly protruding navel that I am concerned about. I can pick up some neosporin ointment tomorrow but do not have anything like that tonight.

The only thing I do have is some disinfectant eggwash liquid which is meant to be diluted at 200:1 for egg washing. It says it kills bacteria, fungi and viruses and is 'safe and biodegradable'.

Should I dab a little of this ointment on the navel to kill any nasties tonight?

Should I get some Neosporin cream tomorrow?

Will the navel shrink back?

And what do I do about my chick being a loner? I had hoped to adopt him under my broody so he would at least have a mummy for company but with this nasty navel, I can't risk putting him in the less-than-sterile environment of an outdoor coop and run can I?

Here is the little guy....

I would Neosporin that as soon as you can just to be safe.
And good luck, hopefully he will perk up eventually.
Is he trying to walk on his own or anything yet?

My pharmacy didn't have Neasporin but I applied a tiny amount of Savlon and it seems to have pretty much healed already....phew!!!!

He was slightly spraddled so he currently has a fetching set of manacles but is standing and walking around. He is also pecking about a lot though has yet to try the crumbles or the water, despite me having taken him to them on numerous occasions to the food and dipping his beak in the water.

I have also managed to track down someone who has chicks due to hatch on Wednesday so hopefully he'll have a friend by Thursday. In the mean time, he is cuddling up to me or his toy lamb.

As I write this, he is nestled between my boobs, warm and happy!!!

That's good. I wouldn't be too worried about the not eating yet for the first day or so because the yolk is still feeding him. Now at three days if he's not eating and drinking, that will be a problem.

So glad I read this post. I have a new hatchling that had issues getting out of the egg and has a tear similar to yours. I read this and ran out and put some Bacatracin on it. It's up on its feet and I am feeling hopeful.
