Advice needed on replaceing my neighbors chickens that my dog killed-

Couldnt have said it better myself... Every animal is not equal in value just because they are the same kind.
There are reasons why we have property laws.
What's that old quote "good fences make good neighbors"?

I know you probably don't want to do this, but have you asked your neighbor how much the chickens and pen were worth? If he or she would come up with a reasonable price, you could give them a cash settlement and let them get their own replacements. If you try to replace the chickens and they aren't satisfied, you may end up having to give them money anyway. Save yourself the trouble.....

Good for you for trying to make this right. I also feel like $50 for 5-6 hens is kind of insulting. Plus you have the damage your dog did to his coop...and his time and effort to raise these chickens up.

I would offer him a more fair price of at least $15. per hen (as these were his "breeding stock") and the damages to his property.

And please do try to keep your dog under control.

Rotties are huge dogs and one running in my yard would terrify ME!

I just want to say KUDOS to you for coming on here and seeking out opinions! At least you are one who is willing to take care of it. He should be thankful for that. I hope all works out in everyone's favor. I know how hard it is to lose chickens to a dog. My neighbors dog killed four of mine in my yard. I just asked that she paid for replacement eggs and I was happy with that. Mine were orpingtons. I don't think they needed to call the police before talking with you though. What people need to realize that it's a chance you take when free ranging your chickens. AND it's a dogs natural instinct to chase them. It doesn't mean it's a bad dog just a normal one. Good luck!

Alot of people here assume his chicken coop was damaged- it was not. Also, some people are assuming that my dog runs free- she does not. She has a huge pen I built for her- about 60/70 ft x 15 feet. She did not escape from the pen.

She isn't huge either. Strong and muscular, yes. Again, she got away from my wife who was walking her when rosie (my dog) saw chickens on our side and chased them over to the other side. To me that is a mitigating circumstance, and it's not the same as if my dog merely went over there unprovoced. It was a freak accident since she never did this before and not as some here imply that she isn't under control/supervision. Anyway, sorry to cause such a rucus here. I actually did chat with April at [email protected] in Burnett,TX and told her what was going on. She is the one who told me that it costs about $4 per chick to raise them to layer stage. She would sell me americaunas for $5 each. This is another offer I can make my neighbor. Thanks again yall. -w-

I think your being Responsible dog owner buying new chicks and feed is the right thing to do. Dogs do what they do just like chickens their aniamls and you can't change that if I could my chickens will eat ants but they don't. It do not cost that much to buy and raise chickens a 50 pound bag of feed is about 16.50 and it lasted me a month with 11 baby chicks.

In this case I would say, one you are a good neighbor and dog owner to make good on this, two "they started it"

JK but they were in your yard first and your dog chased them home, good dog but bad dog you then killed them! Maybe you could get a chicken and teach her they are good guys and you like them? Or not.
