advice on breeds for a beginner

I am planning on hatching my own flock. I have a few breeds in mind but want some ideas on others. I am mostly interested in egg production but dont really want any generic production chicken. I am considering welsummers and easter eggers and copper marans because they lay interesting eggs. I am not certain on what breeds to choose for my "producers".Any ideas or recomendations?

For beginners I would suggest getting some of the breeds that have a well deserved reputation for being calm and gentle (potential lap pets) and are good layers as well such as Australorps, Orpingtons, Brahmas, Sussex, and Faverolles. If high egg production is a major priority, Australorps are the best layers on this list. Whatever breeds you decide to get, good luck with your flock.
