Advice on coop roofing

Look into elastomeric roof coating. Most of the roofs in our sun-drenched city are coated with it. It will reflect most of the sunlight/heat back. I would also suggest insulating the roof, it really helps too.

I have my girls in a metal shed. My area is not as hot as yours, but there are some peak days. The metal shed is next to a tree,so they can get some shade. I try to let them out early am and not go anywhere on really hot days(leaving them locked up. I just have a few holes drilled in the walls up high, and the door is open a crack for air.

Don't know if it would help any to paint the roof white.

2 years and so far so good. I have a tarp over it for leaks, but hope to get that off and things dried up this summer.

We originally used metal roofing because it was free. THis was on the first horse barn. We continued using it because it for asthethic reasons: keep all buildings the same. Even in the horse barn with walls at 9 feet, the inside really heats up and I turn on the fans; note the stalls are solid sides and holds the air. I opened the gable ends and that increased the air flow.

Have seen some buildings that plant gardens on top; usually flat roofs. HOping to figure out how to "plant" on a sloping roof. Removable in the snowy winter. Green leaves absorb a HUGE amount of heat.

Open sides are an excellent idea; most barns are too closed up.

my coop has a metal roof also. we live in N.E. Alabama with very hot summers. when we built our coop, we put insulation under the roof. my work shop is metal building and seeing the insulation they used, I used the same. Its called "double bubble" looks like bubble wrap, except one side is white, the other silver. put the white side on the inside and the shinny side toward the outside. works well here, maybe it will work for you.

Thanks all for the advice and ideas. The price of lumber is outrageous and I couldn't believe what T 111 was going for around here, $43 a sheet.
Thanks Wayneh, I will see about the Double Bubble.
