Advice on how to remove mats from a dogs coat

Luckily, last night I discovered that if I let him roll onto his back and expose his belly, he will let me work on his butt as long as I am carefull about pulling. Oh, and I need to rub his belly every so often.

I will try the Cowboy Magic. I am fairly sure they have it, or something close to it, in town. We have alot of horse people around here.

Wow, $64 for a bottle of that stuff! a friend gave me something to try tonight, so hope fully her cream will work well. His skirt is going to be trimmed next week, I just don't want to have to shave his hair off to the skin because he has sunburn issues on his nose already.

Theydidn't have the small 4oz tube? You get what you pay for though. It's some awsome stuff!

Slinkytoys: Hello to a fellow groomer! Where is Black Forest? 40 years, hun? I hope I am so fortunate. I love it. I was an X-Ray Technician and a Paramedic for 25 hears 1st, so I got a late start. I use cornstarch on cats often, but have never used it as a de-matting tool. Will certainly try it. Never too old to learn something, eh?

Thank you all for the suggestions. The mats are gone, most have been brushed out using a cream a friend makes for her dog, some I had to trim out. He got a full bath last night - I must have washed 5 lbs of dirt off of him. Going to the groomers to be trimmed next week.
He is white and pretty and shines in the sun - until tonight after he plays in the water tank and the dirt all day.

He is one happy pup, he seems to know when he is clean and pretty and can get away with stuff because of it.
Good thng he likes baths, because I noticed last night that he now has fleas. I blame the rabbits and gophers that have decided to inhabit the fenced yard with the dogs. I am sure the Irish setter has them too, but those little bugs sure stand out on the white fur.
