Advice on new baby chick

We are having our first hatch with a broody. Yesterday we had one healthy, vibrant chick hatch out. Last night I noticed another egg was starting to pip. When I went out this morning I thought the chick was dead (the first one is still fine and running around). It's still breathing but it's cold and not under the mom. It's barely moving. The egg looked good - no blood and the baby looks intact and is dry so has been out for a little while. We brought it in and put it on a towel on a heating pad because I gave our heat lamp to a neighbor since we were using a broody. If it dies, it dies but should we do anything else? If it perks up should I put it back out under the hen?

Just make sure the spot it is in is about 90-95 till it perks up and then put it back under mom. You could try putting it under her now.

I would try and get it eating and drinking, some electrolytes if you have them but mainly warm like your doing bc it might have just gotten cold or she knew something is wrong with it but I'm always a puller for the underdog so I would try and then at nighttime see if you can sneak it under her with the other when it has enough strength!

Thank you. The chick started doing a lot better on the heating pad - moving around and cheeping when before we could barely even see it breathe. We put it under the hen because I figure she'll do a better job of regulating it's temperature than we can (it was not under her before - I found the chick and hatched egg lying in front of the hen this morning.) She seemed to take it with no problem.

We had same thing happen and I brought mine in and wrapped it in a flannel and sat holding it for a couple of hours and kept stroking it. One he/she perked up we put it back under the mum. It's fine how and one of the more active cheeky ones. Good luck x
