It has been researched that two males, whether neutered or not, are more likely to fight than females. Two males that are intact will fight the most.
Two females are less likely to fight, BUT when females do fight it is generally a more serious fight and it's more likely a serious injury will happen.

If I were you, I would pick the puppy by personality. All litters have a mix of different personalities. Don't pick the pack leader out of the puppies. A puppy somewhere inbetween in terms of dominance would be best. If you search online you should be able to find puppy aptitude tests. Also talk to the owner of the litter because they will know the puppies best. Also, some mastiffs are aggressive and dominant, so be careful when getting one...research different lines first.

hello, thanks for the great advice!....so...if it were you....a female or a male?....will a male fight with a female?...

IMO, I would say get another male. Females in the canine world are always the dominant one, over males and other females. There is an alpha female and alpha male, with the female being top rung. The boys might be a bit more testy towards each other, but if you get another female, then the female you have now will get into the scuffle. She doesn't fight with the males because she and they know she is the boss. Just my opinion.

If your female is alpha, definitely get a male. Male mastiffs are extremely laid back, if properly socialized, so you shouldn't have a problem. I would really be a little more concerned about the Dane bullying him.

Also, along the same lines of the spaying and neutering (waiting til they're 2 years old), keep their activity to a minumum. Meaning no marathons!

No hard running til they are well past 6 months old, because it can damage their hips and knees. They grow so fast during the first 6 months, and their musculoskeletal system is really stressed. You may have had to do the same thing with your St. Bernards, I'm not sure. So, sorry if I am repeating things you already know! I have seen so many people running with their mastiff puppies.
