Advice on selling eggs

we sell our eggs for $1.50 a dozen to DH's co-workers and usually we give extra away to our neighbors. Usually they return the cartons to keep the cost down, if they want new cartons, then it will be $2.00 a dozen. Most times people are bringing us cartons though.

We dont submerge our eggs to clean them however - we just use a damp cloth to wipe off anything that gets on them and then we dry them off. I would think submerging them would be harmful to the actual egg .... ? but maybe its not - I dont know.

I wipe the blemishes off our eggs with a dampened paper towel. If the egg is clean then it jsut gets wiped off with our hand to remove any sawdust and placed in the egg cartons. We gather our eggs 3x a day or so. Now that the run is a mud pit we are getting dirty eggs, but we just wipe with a damp cloth.

As far as pricing for fresh eggs, there are some things to consider.

A "sustainable settings" farm I know of near Aspen, CO that produces organic pastured eggs sells them for $6/doz, and pickup is at the farm and they can't keep up with the demand. These are very conscientiously produced eggs and, granted, this is a very upscale, over-the-top market, but I do believe that if you want to produce a well-designed egg, you don't have to apologize for wanting to make a profit for it.

Walmart gets $3.50 a dozen for "Organic" brown eggs--- the local health food store gets 45cents per egg for Organic "Vegan" eggs (No animal byproducts in the feed)

We plan to sell ours at the Farmers Market come spring when the rest of our flock starts laying-- as it is, with 13 Gals (8 Rocks and 5 Banties) We are getting 8-10 a day!!!

We give them to the neighbors, will be doing Holliday baking etc......and will be "blowing them out" and freezing them for baking plus doing fimo on the shells to later sell at the farm market as well! (Thanks for the great Idea!!!)

You asked for someone in your area to give you some information and didn't mention the area. Anyway, most feed stores around here will buy them from you for $2.00 a dozen. If you have fertile eggs they have a list of people wanting them. The best way to start is by selling to neighbors, friends pr co-workers. Or you can get lucky like my grand daughters, they were having breakfast at a local cafe and they ran out of eggs. The then poped up and said I have plenty of eggs at grandpops. They now supply most of the cafes in the area. More work than most would want, 30 to 40 dozen most days and more on the week ends. They are putting about $600.00 a month away for college. They buy thier own feed, only I have to pick it up for them.
That is what 500 plus hens can do for you.
