In the Brooder

I’ve been raising chickens for just a few years. I’ve even hatched a few in an incubator as well as a few ducklings.

So, it’s a long story but one of my hens went broody (this was a first for me and I was excited). I candled the eggs as I normally would in the incubator. Well, apparently some eggs were newer than others (from other hens) so when one hatched, my hen had 3 eggs left. I was going to wait for her to keep sitting on them, but after the first chick hatched, she “abandoned” the others I guess you’d say. So I took the other 3 eggs, checked them and saw no movement. So I put them in an ice cream bucket in my porch because I was going to toss them basically. Well a couple of mornings later, I heard chirping. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Yes. A chick was hatching IN THE BUCKET! I totally freaked out and started panicking. Everything I THOUGHT I knew went out the window! 😳 I hurried and set up my incubator (after unsuccessfully trying to give the chick back to the hen). He hatched fine and is thriving. So needless to say, I worried about the other 2 eggs and added them to the incubator as well after candling them too and now seeing movement.

All 3 hatched 3 days apart. Well, my issue now, is that one of my chicks who was fine when hatched, now has a leg issue. I can’t tell if it’s splayed leg or a slipped tendon. I was treating it for splay leg (with a pc of straw and hair tie) but the issue seems to be closer to what I would call the hock maybe? Is it too late to fix? He is almost 2 weeks old now. I’m sorry for such a long drawn out post. But does anyone have any suggestions? I don’t wanna lose the little guy 😔 also he is still eating and drinking. I made food and water more easily accessible.

Does the chicken still walk around fine? Does it seem otherwise healthy? I’m speaking as a disabled person here, but I’ve had hip problems my entire life, and it doesn’t really impact me much, except that I walk kinda slow.

He seems to struggle a bit. When he does walk he stumbles a lot.

How amazing about those chicks hatching! I hope the little one can get around enough to have a good life!🥰

Me too. I cried when I put the first one in the incubator. I was so scared it would die. Now he’s a feisty little fella ☺️ And it’s odd, I can’t for the life of me figure out what exactly he is. I have a Lavender Orpington rooster and I thought his mom was my Black Australorp but now I’m definitely not sure lol

I hope so too. Even if I have to keep it separate and add a smaller chicken like a bantam, I’d rather do that than have the others bully and pick on it. But I live in Louisiana and that goes to show how hot it is everywhere when a chicken can hatch on your back porch 😂
