Hi there, I have a small mixed breed flock of Indian Runner, Cayuga, and Ancona ducks. 7 hens and 1 drake. They are all about 1 1/2 yr and we planned to hatch out one batch of eggs. I started by leaving some of the eggs back instead of collecting them all. At this point there are two nests with 13-16 eggs each that have accumulated over the past couple weeks. The ducks will sit on them for several hours in the a.m. and then they cover them with grass and leave until the next day. None of the ducks have shown broody behaviour. I am unsure whether to leave the eggs and see if they will eventually begin to brood, collect them and look into incubating them in the house, or just throwing them away and forgetting the whole thing. I hate to see that many eggs go to waste. If I was to incubate them in the house can someone offer some advise or a link to the ins and outs of the whole process.

I would recommend watching the ducks to see if they start to become broody, if not then take a few eggs inside and incubate them, but don't take them all because this might cause stress to the ducks. GOOD LUCK!!! :celebrate

Hens will lay a clutch of eggs and if they become Broody they will begin to set. Hens stop laying eggs if Broody. If you decide to collect the eggs destroy the nest. She will not care if the eggs are gone if she is still laying.

Well, go figure, one of my girls finally seems to have gone broody. She's been sitting non-stop. Horray!!! Can you spot her?

Hey I was wondering how can you tell if your duck is broody or not?
I'm pretty new to this but my ducks started leaving in a nest they made instead of just leaving eggs wherever they happened to be. I stopped collecting the eggs in some of the nests. Once they got to about 15 eggs, they started sitting ALL the time. I know they get ooff to get food/water but not long enough that I see them. Whenever I check, they are on the nest. Hope this helps.
