Hello!
I haven't been on here in a few years, but I used to always hover around the duck thread. Its been so long I had to make a new account because I couldn't remember any of my information..
I still have ducks and chickens, but this year I decided to finally take the plunge and get a pair of geese.
I've always loved how African geese look,
So I ordered a pair, along with 10 ducklings from McMurray o. Is there anything particular I should know about these guys? I am very worries they are going to be mean and nasty, which is why we have waited so long to get geese. The way my father talks, who is a old timer, and very experienced with all sorts or poultry. He said they are pretty much the same as ducks when it comes to care. And if that is true mine will be very healthy, and live terrific lives.
But is there anything I should know? I don't get then till the 28th of May. So please give me any information you want! I love to learn about my feathered friends :)

Welcome back to BYC, since I don't have Africans I can't tell you much about them other than they are pretty, but here is a thread where you may find out all you ever wanted to know. and yes geese and ducks are pretty much the same except geese are grazers much more than ducks so some nice green grass will make them awful happy once they can be out side. Good luck and please post pics when they come. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/533413/the-african-and-chinese-goose-thread

We have plenty of nice green grass! All my ducks and chickens free range so he geese will be quite happy, once they are big enough to go out with the big guys :)

I hope so! We also have a very very large pond. It cost 1200 dollars, we dug it only for the ducks.
So our birds are very spoiled! I cannot wait to get them! Along with my ten ducklings.
I was very disappointed with the poultry auctions up here this year. Almost no ducks. I really needed some more females for my flock. So I had no choice but to order some. O darn ;)

wow that's so nice, jealous about the pond, just be careful about snapping turtles that seem to find their way into ponds they are notorious for eating ducklings and goslings and maiming adult water fowl. You'll have to share some pics so we can all drool.

We have had the pond for 2 years, and have not had one snapping turtle.
We have tried keeping painted turtles in there but they are seem to run away.
I'm not sure is a snapping turtle would travel so far to fins my pond. We not live anywhere near a snapping turtle habitat. I don't think I've ever even seen one on my road before, and I've lived here almost my whole life. Maybe we are just lucky *knock on wood*

That's good, we live above a Mountain river and I had no idea we had snappers until we had remnants of a couple of hurricanes come through here and cause the river to flood way over it's banks which washed some very large snappers up on ground. I was pretty surprised to see them actually. I don't let my flock go to the river though too many land predators between us and the river. they are pretty happy with their kiddy pool.

Yeah, one of my friends has a kiddie pool for her ducks, and they love it. I mean, its not like they know the difference if they've never experienced before.
I wouldn't let them go to the river either. I get worried enough about land predators, I live in the middle of fields and woods.
Had a fox last year, but he decided to show up at 11 in the morning when I was home. that was his last mistake. I lost 6 ducks to him though. After I shot him I never had a problem. But I still constantly worry.

Pretty brazen fox. Around here, land and air predators have to deal with me and three Pyrenees. Speaking of pools I clean lots of pools and we have a pond by one of the orchards.
