Thank you all again for your kind words. I have always loved this bird but now Im so excited knowing that she is a green egg layer. She skipped yesterday--Saturday (which I expected, as the egg she laid on Friday was very late) but she was at it again very early this morning! At about 8:00 AM, hubby informed me that there was another green egg.
Now to the story of the day
This morning, we went back to that pigeon store where I originally purchased this lovely hen. I was excited to tell the man who sold me this chicken (his name is Sal), that she has been consistently laying green eggs since last Monday. In my original post, I mentioned that I knew nothing about this hen and that was because Sal said he knew nothing about it except that it is a hen. Well, when I told him about the eggs, he said (and I QUOTE)
Oh, yeah, that is a very young hen and the type of chicken that lays either blue or green eggs--I told you that when you bought it! He did NOT! What I think happened is that he found that out (probably from the original owner when he informed him the hen was sold) AFTER I purchased the hen and THOUGHT he told me.
But I guess it was just as well I didnt know, as I wouldnt have been nearly as surprised to find these unusually colored eggs had I known in advance to expect them. And what a pleasant surprise it was!
We ate two of the eggs today and they were plump and delicious! I did notice that the yolks were quite a bit darker yellow than any of my others. I dont know why that is, as they all eat the same food. Unfortunately, none of my hens truly free range as I always keep them in a fenced, covered area to protect them from predators.
If there are any new developments, I will be sure to make another post! Thank you all again for your continued interest in this topic. Genie
