After Christmas I would like to do a block swap. Update first post

I must admit I don’t pre-wash my fabric if it‘s good quality. Years ago at my quilting guild some of the seasoned lady’s, and I mean the ladys that have been quilting for over 50 years,

said no need to pre-wash if its good quality so I don’t.

For quilting I would take into consideration what type of batting you're using.

I use a cotton batting which DOES shrink in the wash. If your fabrics are pre-washed then you get the slightest bit of puckerness in your finished product like there is in the vintage quilts (vintage quilts used scraps that had once been clothes, therefore they were pre-washed). If I didn't pre-wash AND I used the cotton batting I think there may be too much shrinkage.

Pre-Wash or not to Pre-Wash..........That is the question my dear Watson.

I'd say if your buying fabric from a yard sale you can pre-wash it

.....but if I buy great quality 100% softy, softy, softy cotton fabric.....I ain't pre-washing.

I think it will take too much time too prewash but if I join something that says material needs too be prewashed, then I would feel bad if I didn't follow the directions and my material shrunk. But when I actually start on a project for here, I don't have time too prewash and then have too press over it too. I went too Wal-Mart the other day while out going too the doctor, and I asked her for some tan or beige 100% cotton material cause I thought I might try too make a signature chain for my red hatters too sign since I am not making progress on a picture quilt or starting on that. They had a lot of material for 1.25-1.50 but it was not 100% cotton and all she had that was cotton is what they used too always use for the back of the quilt, well I didn't want that look and she said you don't have too use 100% cotton and I replied that all I have read says too use 100% cotton and she said well my mother quilted all the time and she just used scraps and any material that she could find and her quilts was always beautiful and that piece of material that I showed you is the only 100% cotton we have. Well it looked like flour sack material and since I was practicing and it wasn't but 1.25 a yard, I bought it. That way if I mess up, then I haven't lost too much money trying too learn.

Gin what is the Secret Santa/gift swap? Is that on this board?

That's exactly what I was saying. I didn't want to join, because I know you have rules, and one rule is to prewash. I don't want to join and not follow your rules. I respect everyone's opinions, and I respect rules, as well.

Frankly, I have so darn many UFOs to finish up before Christmas, I don't really have time to sit here on the computer! LOL I need to get busy!​

I see no problem, I think the main reason pre-wash is asked for is mainly because there are some smokers on here and we ask thqat they pre-wash before sending to others.

I'm just a smoking as I'm sitting here.

I don't care if you prewash, just make sure if you don't that you use the good stuff.

Some ways to tell are, if you look at the salvage (is that how you spell it?) there are circles with colors in them if the color is right in the circle and not half in the circle and half out that is good fabric. Also there should be number in the circles. By the way these colors are to show you what other colors go with the fabric you have. When I went to my guild the other night and one of the speakers told us that you wouldn't believe how many people didn't know that.


If your worried about the color running you can cut a square out and put it in hot water over night. If you have colored water in the morning you should wash it.

Anything anyone else can think of.
