Hi, I am new here but found you through google - this is an amazing site and it looks like it is full of resources. I have done a rudimentary search, and I apologize if the answer to this question has been posted but I missed it (or if there is a better area to post this query, please let me know!).

I am probably moving to Agawam, MA from Ohio. I know that you cannot own chickens unless you have 5 acres in Agawam. I will not have 5 acres, although I desperately wish that was not true. Does anyone know how strict Agawam's rules are for chickens? Does it just depend on your neighbors? Is there someone in Agawam who would like help taking care of their chickens?

I reallllllllly want to have backyard chickens but I think I am going to be foiled again.

I saw there are a few posters active from Agawam, so any advice/help is seriously appreciated!

Thanks!

here is the info I pulled from the village's zoning ordinance:
The keeping and raising of poultry, livestock and pigeons, whether for the table or other purposes, or other like objectionable uses are prohibited.

Do you think I could keep a couple chickens as pets?

Should we assume that you already know the address to which you will be moving, and so know what zone it is in? Agawams ordinances seem only to prohibit poultry in some of the residential zones. There are portions of the town, and neighboring communities like Southwick, where chickens should be no problem.

Yeah, I know the address and zone and double checked the zoning ordinances as well as calling the city directly (anonymously).

Another member on here lives in Agawam, and the town gives him a hard time. BUT..mostly because his neighbors keep calling on him..
