Age chics can go in coop??

I have 6 golden comets about 4 weeks old, and living with mommy.LOL..When can I put them in their coop?? I'm in Ohio if that matters any.

Are there adult birds in the coop?

If not and if you have a heat source for them to get under, you can put them in now.

If there are adult birds there, you must wait until they are 16-18 weeks of age.

They will be going into a brand new coop. I currently have them under a red heat lamp, is there a certain wattage I should use inside a coop??

Are you keeping the chicks with the mommy or separating them? If you leave her with them she will keep them warm in your new coop!

Use the heat lamp you have now. Have it in one corner so they can move away from it if it gets to hot.

Mine are in a makeshift doghouse/mini coop. Suppose to get down to 47* tonight. When I left them a little while ago, they were all in a pile peeping when I turned on the flashlight.

Mine were chicks last Fall...they were out in the coop (w/lamp) at three weeks. Be certain to secure your lamp well, not with the clamp many come with, but with wire or chain. A back-up wire is extra good. I would think that a 75 or 100W would be fine, but it depends on how low/high your lamp is hung really. I still have my old brooder thermometer out in my coop...I like having an idea of temps out there even now.

If your young chickens are already living with their momma hen, 4 weeks should be fine for coop life. I'm in Ohio too. My youngest were born in the outside coop in April,22,23,& 24. These chicks are growing well, mom has done anexcellent job with them.
