Age for breeding and laying?

My pullets are almost laying age now. My cockerels have just started mating with them in the past few days. Is there any correlation between mating and laying for the pullets? Will they start mating before laying?

I saw some mating before the first egg, but it all happens about the same time, maybe within a couple of weeks.
