Aggressive chick that bites me

We have two SLW hens that were very aggresive as chicks but have turned out to be very nice and lovable hens. Also our Buff hens were very very unsociable as chicks they would scream bloody murder if you even tried to touch them. Now they are never more than 5 feet away when we are out side and always wanting to be picked up and held. So maybe you should give her a chance to grow out of it.

Forgot about these earlier, but I have some large fowl Cochins that I ordered from a breeder. Up until a couple weeks ago, one of the young roosters would always run up and bite me when I was handling the other chicks in the pen, and one would bite my hand when I tried to pick him up. Now they've both calmed down considerably (at 8 weeks old), though one does still like to bite my fingers when I try to mess with him. The one that used to attack me for bothering the other chicks is much calmer; however, I still call him Boss. There are 3 other roosters in that batch: 1 rather stand-offish one, and 2 very friendly ones. Their personalities really can vary drastically, even among breeder birds apparently.

I had a buff orpington chick like that. I hand raised 10 chicks and she was the only one who would peck me when I tried to pick her up. Even when she got older was difficult to catch even though the other chicks grew up to be very tame. I called her Pecky Becky. Eventually, when she matured she turned out to be my only broody hen. I would pick her up off the nest every night and put her up on the roost and she would grumble about it but she never bit me. I don't know what changed... maybe just the hormones kicking in. I felt sorry for her and got her some fertile eggs to hatch. She is a good mother and lets me check her eggs, candle them and handle her chicks now. I quit calling her Pecky Becky and now I call her Broody Violet because she has a little V on her tailfeather like a monogram. You just never know!

Here's Broody Violet all puffed up on her nest. She really very sweet and docile now.

I'm sorry you are having a problem with this little baby. Unfortunately, I think it's a common problem with hatchery SLWs because I've heard a lot of people with the same complaint.

I personally bought one, and loved how she looked. I wanted her to be in my flock so badly, but eventually I had to give in and sell her.

She would bite me during handling, mercilessly peck the other chicks she was raised with, and kept them away from the food. I decided that no pretty coloration in the world was worth her attitude and the sacrafice of my peaceful flock.

I sold her on Craigslist to a lady who had full grown hens who would knock her nasty butt down a peg or two. Hopefully it taught her manners and she's now a good hen.
