Aggressive chicken

I try to pick her up daily. And also have been putting my hand on her back and gently pushing her down like I am the rooster. She is always the first one there when I open the door. She is very bold and always the one to approach me. She will peck at my feet and jump up and peck at my hands. Now my other red rooster is becoming more bold. I hope the others don't learn from her. I also think I need to work on my own confidence when I enter the coop.

I mean hen. They are both hens. Though they act like roosters!

She does sound intimidating!!!

My horse is such a good boy under saddle, but he can be rude and pushy in his stall. His first owner spoiled him with treats. I know we're talking chickens vs. horses, but all animals learn quickly who is in charge and what they can get away with.

Hope you can show her you're the boss!

While talking chickens with someone I know, she told me she will hold her aggressive chickens by the legs upside down. They flap and squawk, and then calm down. Then she will let them down and I suppose her reasoning is they are given a lesson in who's boss. [Please don't direct any angry messages at me...I don't even have chickens yet and I don't know enough to condone this. But she's had chickens for years and it's what she does to keep the nasty ones in line.]

There she is. Her name is Fancy. Ha ha! I am up to 3 eggs a day! Good thing I have a healthy cholesterol level!

Hello and Welcome to BYC!

I have found that some types of chickens are more aggressive than others, the Red ones (called Rhode Island Red by hatcheries/feed stores) are one of the breeds that can be bossy. So can the ones they call Barred Rocks.

Please do not hold them upside down - although they will stop struggling it is because they are dizzy from the blood going to their heads - and it could hurt them because of how their lungs work.

Carrying them around or putting your hand on them until they squat is one way of making yourself the top rooster. If that doesn't work, there is a very good thread on taming aggressive behavior here on the site - you can see what other people have done.

I thought it sounded like a less than optimal way of dealing with aggression when I heard it (upside down) and couldn't see myself doing this. I like your suggestions and will remember them if I'm faced with some aggressive behavior.

I was wondering about the breed. I have 2 Rhode Island reds that I bought from a very nice local lady. They are definitely more aggressive than my other 4 mixed breed hens. I picked up Bertha the other red yesterday and Fancy shot me the evil eye. These 2 were more friendly than the others when they were young. Now they are mean.
