Aggressive cockerel

He doesn't have spurs yet, but he pecks pretty well (at my leg today).

As far as pets - not really looking for pets, just egg producers. We don't really handle them much if at all, but we'd like to go into the run without being attacked :)

Thanks for all the advice. I guess we'll try to give him away (with a warning that he is definitely not a pet) and if no one wants him, we'll have to figure something else out.

Oh ouch, I've been pecked by broodies before, not nice. Hopefully you can find someone to take him, otherwise you'll have to butcher him yourself, or just keep him in confinement,.

You are making the right call, most roosters are nice (the rooster in my main flock is a rhode island red, he is absolutely wonderful), but some are just plain nasty. When they just start to mature they can get a little pushy, but you should never tolerate a rooster spurring you(fortunately I have never met the sharp end of a spur, but I'm sure it hurts).

If you want a nice pet chicken for your son, then try getting a couple of silkies, they are friendly and very sweet, kids love them. Even silkie roosters are usually very nice, provided children respect that they are not teddy bears. My six year old sister loves the silkies, she knows them all by name, and can just walk up to them and pick them up, lovely little critters.

Good luck, sorry you've had an unpleasant rooster.
Do NOT get a Silkie rooster, most of the time they are nice but there is always the possibility. And do not handle thin and cuddle them as chicks or they end up feeling dominant over you and will attack you. I would recommend just hens if you don’t want to have the possibility of having to try to stop him attacking.
Please do what you Belive is right. Good luck with your rooster

I think you’ve answered your own question.
You don’t want to breed.
You don’t want the noise.
He wasn’t supposed to be male.
Neither you not your child can cope with him.

I can’t help but feel sorry for the poor chap.
Ime they grow up. How they grow up largely depends on how you treat them. This one doesn’t sound like he’s in with a chance.

Going to racially profile for a second but for a good cause. If you have any latinos in your community they love fresh chicken and will happily take him. In fact when you post him on craigslist you may do well to also post him in spanish. If you are clear he is a food rooster getting him taken will be much easier than you think. I agree with Dobie and Alex though, RIR boys are not for beginners they aren't bad but they are extremely roostery.:)
