Hi I have a 15 week old White Leghorn Roo named Tino. We are getting a bachelor pad for him but until then how can I get him to stop pecking me????

Have you tried giving him any treats before he starts to peck? How aggressive is it? Is he alone or with girls? How close are you two? Have you tried holding him and petting him when he does? Do you think it's for attention or to hurt you? Do not back down from him at all, he's trying to see if he's the real boss or if it's you.

WOAH!!! He is very aggressive with his girls and food, even hand feeding. He makes me scared so I don't pick him up, He is the boss right now. It is often not for attention. Right now he is with his girls.

Q: Do you speak rapid-fire like you type!?!?

Try this: when hand feeding him if he pecks too hard close up your hand and pull it back. Then offer it to him again and repeat until he stops pecking hard. Does he spurr you?

Lol yes I speak a little fast lol. My brain just functions quickly, sorry. I would show him that you are the boss, he might be the protecter and the breader but you are the master and queen. He needs to know you won't back down. Bring a stick with you and if he attaks block him and try to show no fear cause they can sense it. I used to say "if you hit me I can hit you back harder" To my rooster Ricky if I felt threatened. You could kill him very easily, keep that in mind. He's the one who should be scared. Still at the same time try to become friends. You both have a duty to the girls. He is there to help them and so are you. You need to become mutual. I sometimes still pick up ricky and call him my old man kitty cat because he needs to know I love and respect him and he'll become much more docile

I have an ornery rooster, who will take any opportunity to challenge me. I have tried holding him and staring him down. I'm not the least bit afraid of him, because I know I'm bigger, but it can be annoying. So, here's what I figured out. I carry a squirt bottle in the pen with me when I first go in. If he looks at me sideways, I squirt him square in the face. It's harmless. He can't figure it out. He knows it doesn't hurt, but he doesn't like it. I think he thinks I spit. Once he has been squirted, he goes off and leaves me alone. Then I hang the bottle on the fence so it's ready for the next time. Maybe once a week I will randomly "spit" at him, just to remind him I do. :lau

I think there is a side benefit to this on these hot summer days.

Can you carry a stick when you go in the pen? Skinny one from a tree, or thick like a broomstick. Chickens will usually stay back because the stick is unfamiliar, and then in time they just get used to moving away from it.

You can also use the stick to push the cockerel away if needed. (Don't hit, just push.)

I'm a bit concerned about your bachelor pad--are you planning to have him live completely alone? That's not really good for him. (If he's next to the hens, with wire fencing in between so he can see/hear/interact, then my concern goes away.)

Alternately, a rather permanent solution is to kill, butcher, & eat the cockerel. Or give him to someone that would like to eat him. But it sounds like this one is a pet, so that may not be acceptable to you.
