Aggressive Tom

I thank all of you for your suggestions & advice!

My clothing is all neutral colored...khakis, greens, browns...no blues or bright colors. The same with buckets & anything I work with. I work alone with over 500 exotics of all kinds & it's just safer to stay neutral as some, as mentioned, don't like bright colors or changes in routine.

Whacking him only seems to make it worse & squirting him with blasts of water from the water hose doesn't phase him. There's no chasing this guy...he doesn't run & he doesn't back down. When I carried the push broom to keep him off of me, he jumped on it & jerked it away from me. His head is just about waist high to me so he's no "little" bird!!

Yes. perhaps it continues because he thinks he's won as I do exit quite quickly after every confrontation with him right at my heels!

I'm going to try Frosty's idea today...I'll be the aggressor today & pin him down (if I can) until he crys uncle

I gotta tell ya, I have to pen water buffalo & zebra today for vaccinations & worming...they're not the friendliest animals...but I'd rather deal with them than that one crazy turkey!!

Thanks ya'll...I appreciate the help!! If it doesn't work out today, I'll invite you all over for a roast turkey dinner!

We have only ever had one agressive tom in all our time with turkeys, he was a Royal Palm and turned at the drop of a hat. My wife and I were in the pen one day and our daughter came in and he strutted over to her and she kicked at him. She turned and ran and it was game on after that, I tried everything short of killing him and nothing worked. He had such nice markings I put up with it until the following spring so we could use him for breeding. One day an older guy came over that had alot of experience, no kids and said he would take him. He had a couple hens on pasture and no other birds so I gave him the tom. Last I heard the tom was still mean as a snake but couldn't to anybody.

well, mine has gone from chasing me when I wear black pants, to chasing anybody wearing anything black, to this week which he started off going after my husband no matter what he was wearing, to today going after me no matter what I do! LOL he is getting viscious! We are carrying brooms with us everywhere we go now! He will get penned this afternoon for the rest of breeding season (hopefully that's all it is)

With the tom I was talking about before picture this one. One day we had some people come over to buy some chicks and I was out "talking" with that tom (You can see that pen easy from our driveway) and I was rolling on the ground fighting with him. I didn't hear them pull up and there I was in plain sight. When they asked Sharon what the deal was she just told them it her husband talking with the turkeys. She was barely able to keep a straight face thru that and I just stayed over in the pens until they left. They never came back for some strange reason? Figure that one

My husband is a small man, Amos comes to his waist easily and he runs from Amos (on the other hand I laugh and chase him with the broom) so I can easily envision him "rolling around" with him one day. Now THAT I will get a video of!!!

perolane, I don't know if you have a chicken grabber? The kind that has a wood handle with a metal rod coming out and a hook on the end... If you have one or can get one, carry it in and right away go after the turkey. Use the hooked end to grab a leg and pull it out from under him. Then immediately get on top of him to pin him down. If you can't catch a leg, I have been known to use it to grab them by the neck, too. Make sure you have the wings pinned, I can tell you from experience that if you catch a wing to the nose it really hurts!

Steve, I would have been there with a video camera!

Last spring when my turkey pen flooded and I had to get the turkeys out, I was wearing enough mud that I might as well have been rolling in it with them! But I was lucky, nobody saw me. There was even mud up my nose, and my arms were covered even though I had long sleeves on.
