Hello all! I recently purchased my first duck, Bart (short for Bartholomew) about 2 months ago and everything is fairly easy! When my mom bought Bart she failed to ask for its sex and we still have no clue, but we worked with what we thought its sex was. Anyways that's besides the point, Bart isn't aggressive per say but when he/she is approached by me he/she turns and flees quickly and when I put him/her in my lap he vibrates and bites at my arm until I put him/her down): I would hope that it would be used to me seeing as I feed, clean its area, and take it out in the daily bases! I don't know if its something I should work on emotionally wise or should I just give it more space??

Thank you so much! I'll need all the luck I can get, he may be a duck but he's as stubborn as a bull!(-:

Well we know two things about Bart. No.1 he/she runs away from you. No.2 he doesn't like being held on your lap. Bart is not aggressive just letting you know what he doesn't like.

You can try a different approach - don't hold Bart, and don't pursue Bart. Try to lure Bart over to you with no strings (no grabbing etc.) with treats. I don't know what ducks like to eat. But if you sit quietly and throw some bit of treats Bart's way - Bart may inch over to see what it is.

Repeat this maybe 2 or 3 times a day, never trying to catch Bart but, having treats nearer and nearer to you while Bart gets braver and sees you haven't tried to grab or chase him.

After awhile he may come up to you on his own looking for treats - just talk nicely to him and let him explore you if he wants to. He may never be cuddly like a puppy but, hopefully he will lose his fear of you.

Do you have a little wading pool he could swim in - that would surely cheer him up. I don't know if ducks need to be in a flock like chickens. Maybe he would be less frightened if he had a duck buddy or two.

I hope this helps.

Welcome to BYC! Glad you decided to join our flock. I'm a chicken person and don't know much about ducks (although I've had a few), but I have to admit that ducklings are the ultimate in cute. I would definitely recommend checking in with our duck experts at the link that TwoCrows gave you for the duck section. Please feel free to ask any other questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.
