! AGRESSIVE QUAIL !

I have 4 quails, 3 of them we suspect are females and we’re raised together. 1 of them is older and a male and he stays in a separate cage but sometimes hangs out with the other 3. He is about 8-9 weeks old and just a few day’s ago he has become very aggressive. He has always been very sweet so this came as quite a shock. He was raised alone so we were the only family he had and always wanted to hang out with us. He acted similar to a puppy. Now he has become awful. We used to hold him and stroke him, now we can’t do that without being pecked. He has drawn blood a couple times and yesterday he attacked my eye, which now has a big cut below it and bled quite a lot. Is this just temporary and what can we do to fix it? Thank you!

I never had a house-quail.

But 8 weeks is quite sure a hormone boost, turning from teenager to adult.
He might fight for the alpha position, as he sees you and your family as quails.

This hormone boost will be slowing down after a while, but if he will be the same, I'll cannot tell.

I had one of these roosters, tame as a dog, until he hit puberty. I couldn't keep him, he didn't calm down. I couldn't interact with my hens anymore without being attacked. I only went in there with a wooden stick to shoo him of, never hit him. I love my quail, but that was a no go. I sent him to the freezer. Maybe you have more patience.

i have a male that tries to attack me whenever i put my hand in his cage. I have him separated with a hen that can handle him. He's happy, and i try to wear gloves whenever i do anything with him.
Your roo sounds really aggressive. I had one that calmed down over the winter and now that it's summer again he's not that aggressive. good luck

I think it's hormonal. My quail used to be really tame, but tried to peck at eyeballs and hairs anytime she got the chance, like a pupoy will chew at anything when its teeth grows, at that age. And she wouldn't follow me like a chick anymore. If there were things to her un-liking, she made me know it by growling and pecking . She became reliable and dependent again when she got into the full laying cycle(she would come to me when she laid eggs and demand to be petted after she did her job), but roosters are unfortunately likely to become a revel. Either way the aggressiveness fades with age, if it's any help.

Hi we had the same problem with our boy only one egg hatched and he was very sweet but at about 2-3 month he started biting and pecking I tried to.show him I was top of the pecking order by gently flattening him to the ground till he stopped struggling he stopped pecking after 2 or 3 weeks but them started to crow all through the night. I personally have come to the conclusion boys probably dont make the best pets. I think if they aren't afraid of humans they will try at be top of the pecking order especially if we are nice to them. Protect yourself and your eyes! You shouldn't be afraid of your pet. We ended up letting him go and I certainly dont miss those stinky poops! Good luck

My flock was 5 last year, 3 females and 2 males. One male was sweet and had coupled with one of the females. The other one was aggressive and ended up killing the nice one.

I keep mine for the eggs, and the experience because they're fun and sweet. I think I might try butchering if I get any more aggressive ones.
