Quail do it on purpose, you know. I had a natural hatch under mom last week. I knew the day they were supposed to hatch, and watched the eggs like a hawk.

They hatched a couple of days later than I expected, and I had to leave for the day. I checked the eggs before I left, and nothing. An hour later, a friend called to tell me I had a quail baby. They do it to drive us crazy!

Congrats on your new babies!! I got three out of 7 eggs.

Iam up to 21 now, the hatches from these eggs keeps being really drawn out! I had 10 hatch yesterday, 8 on Friday and Saturday, and 3 today so far. Talk about aggravating! The same thing happened last time I got eggs from this person. That time they hatched over 5 DAYS!!

But what a wonderful surprise when you get home to see them!!!!

is it illegal to take the desert quail eggs and hatch em? I live in az, and saw some eggs last year.... but never thought about it til a few days ago. Just curious i doubt i will

You have to have a permit to own Gambel quail here (it's only $5) and I'm pretty sure it's illegal to disturb them in their natural habitat. You don't need a permit here to own Coturnix (Japanese) quail or button quail, and someone on here would probably be happy to ship you some eggs to hatch! If you haven't already, check out the Other Birds forum on the index if you're interested in Coturnix. They're a lot of fun and quick and easy to hatch/raise.
