So I took my flash light and was getting ready to grap a girl to put her saddle on ..... it was about 10:00 tonight And there was a black an white snake sitting on top of one of the nesting boxs!!! I looked at it, it looked at me and I just ran for the house! I called my friend to "get your gun and come over" no such luck......if mine was in working order...... This would not be a problem! IS there anything i can put in the coop to keep the snakes out?!

now i know where the mice are!

Oh, I am so sorry. I hate snakes too! I cannot imagine one in my hen house, I might be forced to take drastic steps.

After the last one we caught - eating an egg in my broody's nest - my husband searched online and found snake traps. They are designed somewhat like crab traps. Bait inside, snake finds its way in, but can't find the hole to get back out. I think I'm going to get one.

We've had a lot of snakes - right now I think we might have a problem because the egg count really dropped off.

Nothing works like hardware cloth but snakes can make themselves nearly flat getting in they have a tough time getting out with a full belly. I scatter golf balls all around the coops we had a rat snake get bound with a golf ball last year it killed him we found him too late. My young chickens and all quail are in hardware cloth snake proof cages we have alot of snakes.

I think everyone needs a "snake stick". A friend made me some, one for hen house, one for my house, one for my golf cart, etc. He used a broom handle, weedeater line (or light rope) and some screw in round grommets (?) like the ones a screen door hook hooks into. Line is attached securely at one end of the pole with a screw and then feeds loosely up the side of the pole through the round screw in things, and then the line ends secured at the other end of the pole with a knot that keeps the line from falling back down through the loops. You feed the line out so that there is a loop on the ground end and just slip it over the snake's head. Pull the line taut and the snake is secured at the end of the pole. You can then reach down, pick it up (or call someone else to pick it up) and then do what you need to do with it. Works great.
