AI ...so how much is enough?

Ditto on the rubber ended medicine droppers. That's what I have always used. Rubber end held in mouth and can also carry on a conversation (multi-tasker). 2 to 3 females at times depending upon the male. Way easy once you get the hang of it.

LOL on the "multi tasking" never tried a medicine dropper, I've always used the plastic spoon method.

I should also mention that he "warmed up" the medicine dropper by rubbing it back and forth between his hands for a few seconds. Much like warming up a stethoscope - I'm sure the birds don't like the feel of a cold medicine dropper on their little behinds.

much better than the pointer finger method. That is how I was first shown. He collected from the same roo 3 times on the tip of his finger then just flicked it to show me how easy it was

Oh and I even know who taught you!
When I do it, I take the bird (silkies) and sit down and try to hold their legs still between my knees. I stroke the back a few times and then get the semen. I use a small insulin syringe. Works well for me.

I learned SOOO much from Beany that day in just a couple of hours. He was so generous with his time and knowledge . . . wish I could have stayed all day.

Ah well, I was WRONG! I thought Al Prado taught you, I guess Beany learned the technique from Al as thats the way Al does it!

In general, chilling sperm lowers its fertility. In dogs and horses the collection device is best kept at close to body temp.

I totally understand the reasons for AI'ing, it is the mentalt hat gets me to laughing... and the thought that I am actually gonna try it... LOL RFLOL I am NOT going to tell any of my friends how it happens, though!!!!!!!!!!

the part of this post that caught my eye is where you said you are sneeking your birds behind the barn..... for best results when artificially inseminating chickens, its best to try to do it as quickly as possible. while they are relaxed and in their pen, scoop them up, position them, do the deed, and collect the semen, this should take no more than 10 seconds, the locger you hold him, the less likely you will get a good amount of semen

Ok, I've done AI on goats and thats of course alot more indepth but, was wondering where you place the semen in the vent of the hen?

Also, for the ones that you all are talkng about with too much fuzz... I just wonder (if caged) if the use of KY, or vasaline to kinda slick down the fuzz out of the way would allow better conseption from the roo covering the hen?? Has anyone tried this? For the show hens I would think this might be easier than clipping or trimming back those cute lil fuzzy butts
