Air sac determines sex.

Yesterday was a high of 18 C, low of -1. 5 eggs.

GLP SI 71, off center, 47 g,

BLP SI 70, side, 49 g

Serama SI 70, 28 g centered

Satin silkie SI 76 tiny air cell, 39 g, side

EE SI 65, 49 g, side

That means Sabrina isn’t broody. But it means I get to try to hatch her eggs 🙂

I won’t be setting any more of Dustbunny’s though. Being a serama I was sure the buff polish cockerel would leave her alone until I cracked an egg to fry then thought it was fertile. Turns out he was respectful after all. Or it just didn’t work out.

I probably won’t set any of the other eggs either. I’ll find out in 2 days.

Today is a high of 17, low of 0 C and cloudy. Only 3 eggs, all have side air cells.

EE egg SI 73, 48 g
White egg w white spots so maybe the campine. SI 76, 42 g
BLRW SI 55 and also 55 g

Since I wasn’t having the best day decided to be impatient and candle the incubator eggs except the 6 that are due to hatch Saturday back to the smart incubator as the temps there are better at around 99.5 F. The hovabator had dropped to 98.5 F. I candled and found 11 clear eggs so I removed them. One BLRW that may be clear and another BLRW that has a blood ring but I want to leave them til day 7 on the 16 to be sure. That leaves 15 eggs that are due April 30- 6 centered air cells and 9 side.

I got little containers to put the eggs in at lockdown to sort them.
The Turner should be here tomorrow. I’ll try to remember to take a picture of the top of the eggs tomorrow and write the details of each egg.

I’m picking up a dozen Easter Egger eggs on Thursday to hatch for fun then sell the day old chicks at the May 10 auction. Even though I won’t keep most or even any of the chicks I hatch it’ll still be interesting to see if there’s any correlation with the numbers.

Sabrina the Satin silkie didn’t lay and might not for a couple of weeks. At least I got one possibly fertile egg.

I’m not sure if I should set the eggs from the 7 other hens that I’ve collected since the 9th. The last fertile egg is labeled April 8 so I think I will. None of the serama eggs are fertile. 3 of the golden polish’s eggs, laid April 2, 5, and 9 are not fertile. A buff polish’s laid April 5 isn’t. 2 other white eggs with centered air cells and one with no air cell laid on the 6th, 8th and 9th respectively were also clear.

The 2 brown egg layer hens BLRW and Colombian rock as well as the EE appears fertile up to April 8. I’m going to go ahead and add the other eggs along with the eggs that will be set on Thursday.

Eggs that will go in the incubator

Centered air cells will go in fridge then incubator if I’ll have space when the ones on top go in there when the oldest is 10 days old.

Well I’m just horrified.

This is what happened to the egg that was both the roundest and had the clearest side egg cell.

It was actually over that bloody spot in the middle. The only thing I can think of is that the incubator is small with a large machine on the inside of the lid that cracked the egg. I was home all day and would have seen someone else or my cat on top of it from the outside.

I’m getting a broody silkie tomorrow (broody at least 2 weeks) and am tempted to give her the remaining 5 eggs but then I might not know which chick hatched out of which egg. So I’ll probably just have to ensure the eggs don’t go directly under that bulky part in the middle of the top of the incubator.

I’m also buying cream legbar eggs and silkie eggs tomorrow that will be set with Easter Egger eggs Thursday. Legbars are autosexing so I’ll know at hatch if they are males or females.
The Turner didn’t arrive.

Ironic that this is the only incubator I’ve had that has a picture of a cracked egg

I hope this Turner will work.

The silkie eggs I got today have large air cells so they seem mostly centered with a few off center and some I can’t make out. The legbar eggs I can’t see in mostly. The few that I could appear centered. I bought a candler that arrives Saturday so I’ll wait til then to set those eggs. The silkie eggs I need to set tomorrow along with the Easter Egger eggs as the oldest egg will be 10 days old. These are the cleanest eggs I’ve seen. She probably uses hemp bedding.

I’ll hopefully find time to update on the SI and air cells for those.

Today was cloudy and cold. High of 7, low 0 C. 7 eggs but the 7th was given to me by the owner of the broody silkie I got . I thought I took a picture of Marie but I don’t see it. I’ll try again tomorrow.

The Turner doesn’t work. I sent an email to the seller to see if they have any suggestions. In the meantime I will hand turn. I finally ordered a caliper. I thought $6 USD would be a million in Canadian like most things but it is also $6 on Amazon.ca. The caliper will arrive on May 9 or after.

I remember reading something like that on here. But also someone posting about McMurray saying that when they had a power outage more male chicks hatched.
I think its the other way around.Baby cockerels are less tolerant of cold temps and die leading to more pullets being hatched
