ALABAMA!!

I was given 15 chicks that was a month old and out of the 15 one had Mareck's and I think I may have another one that has it.

I'm sorry to hear that. :( I didn't realize how common Mareck's was until I started reading up on it today. I guess I have to assume that my remaining birds must be resistant, since none of them have been sick. My Hoover's chicks will be vaccinated (none of my other birds were), so hopefully they'll be okay, but it does make me a little more nervous about introducing them.

All the ones I have coming from Hoover's will also be vaccinated. None of the ones that was given to me were. Hopefully you and I both will have good luck withe the new ones.

She didn’t make it. I don’t think she was egg bound. I’m going to take her to the diagnostic lab on Monday morning. Hopefully it was nothing contagious, and the other birds will be fine! Fingers and toes crossed.

I'm a little behind on my reading. Sorry about your chicken. What diagnostic lab did you take her to?

Hello all. Im in Arab (25mi south of Huntsville in marshall county) and have been a member for awhile but only recently (last spring) got back into poultry. I have been looking for large fowl cochins. Going to be looking for Muscovies, Peking, and Embden eventually too. Aside from all that, it sure is good to see so many others nearby. Are there any swaps, sales, or meets in a driveable distance?

I live in Coffee County, near Elba, Enterprise, Troy, Andalusia, Luverne. I need to buy 50 meat pullets, about 8 weeks old and coccidiosis free. Does anyone know if there is a hatchery in my area, or Dale County, or any county not too far from me? I'd sooner pick them up at the hatchery myself than rely on the USPS for the delivery. Thanks.

I got my chicks in from Hoover. 6 of the 15 were dead and 4 more looks like they aren't"t going to make it. I went to tractor supply and got 11 chicks that are doing good. Hoover

I took her to the state livestock diagnostic lab here in Auburn. She ended up having Mareck’s Disease (visceral type). My Niederrheiner was killed by my resident hawk, I have decided, based on the way information I could gather. The girls stayed on lockdown for two and a half weeks and are very happy they are getting to go out in their run during the day again now.

Oh no! I’m so sorry to hear that you didn’t have a good order experience. I hope your TSC chicks and the remaining Hoover’s chicks are doing well.

Has anyone every purchased chickens from Hoover Hatchery?
I am recently a new chicken mama. I spent 2 weeks in January looking at every hatchery and finally decided on hoovers because they had everything that I was looking for. I ordered 17 chicks of varying types (Welsummers, Calico, Rainbow, Isa, Tetra, Production red, Americuana, Delaware). As I am new to raising chickens I wanted to do everything right. I ordered all the vaccinations and beak trimming. Made a beautiful brooder, bought the eco glow 20, set up a beautiful nursery for my babies. I got my order this week..and it has been heartbreaking. I took off from work the day they arrived so very excited to see my babies. They arrived alive and well. Now, I fully expected some to not survive so I was happy. I even know that sometimes within 48 hours you can lose a few. Well it started with one. I could tell from the start it wasn't well. We separated it and nursed and she seemed like she was doing great. The next day she died. That morning I also had 3 more die. The next day I had 2 more die. All total so far in less than a week I have lost half of my babies. I was careful to check for pasty butt so I know that wasn't the cause. Hoover did refund my money but that doesn't help when your babies start dying. I am afraid to look in my brooder each morning. I have friends that order from McMurry and they have never had this problem. Not sure if I would order from Hoover's again. Keeping my fingers crossed that the rest of my babies survive. If not, I may not venture into having chickens again. This is heartbreaking.

Hey ya'll! I'm in Huntsville. I'm wondering how I'm going to pay my utility bill. It is sooo high from keeping chickens warm!
Being in a closed building at night is plenty of warmth for chickens in Alabama. I live near Ashland Al. Even on the coldest night this winter all our girls were fine. A few roosters with larger combs who were in pens outside the coop got a bit of frostbite on their combs but are OK now. Chickens are not that far removed from their wild cousins and don't need to be coddled as much as some people think.
