Howdy, Hilda! Welcome to BYC and the Alabama!! thread! If you find any organic feed at a reasonable price, let us know, too!
For the summer heat, shade and fresh water is imperative. I freeze several 20 oz bottles, half full of water, and drop them into the waterers. When one is thawed, I put it back in the freezer and get another one. Also, it helps tremendously if you provide them with a place to cool their feet. A shallow pan with an inch of water and a frozen bottle will do. Some people put wading pools out for their flocks. The birds seem to love them but they get NASTY!!
Misters are another possibility. All of these are just suggestions and may only be necessary for the less heat tolerant breeds. Many chicken farmers just supply deep shade and fresh water and their birds do fine.
If anyone wants marans chicks, there is a woman in jemison that sells pullets cockerals and chicks. I think the chicks are $3 and pullets are 15$. most of the time she is in the chilton county mule trader.
