ALABAMA!!

All they can eat

I wanted mine truly "fattened".
You don't want leftovers sitting around though. They should eat well in the cooler weather. I only fattened with the buttermilk egg bread for the last 3 to 4 weeks. I'm not sure how old yours are, but you need the right nutritional mix while they are still chicks. I also added fruits and veggies to their pen - tomatoes, pumpkins, etc. from the garden.

I was amazed by the long breast and white meat on the dorkings. I had never heard of them when a friend suggested them to me, and I'm really glad I was introduced to this very old heritage breed.

Hey there, Mr Chickenmath!! I've been wondering about you. Where have you been?

As was stated, corn alone is not good for your chickens, too many carbs, not enough nutrition, It is better given as an occasional treat. If you are having trouble keeping weight on a bird or birds, I would first suggest that you worm them well and then go for some extra whole grain wheat or oats. Don't feed them too much, though, remember to keep their nutrition balanced. You can also supplement with all manner of table scraps. Meat, bread, veggies are great, but steer away from sweets and uncooked rice. You can give them some scrambled eggs, a small handfull of cat food or some tuna, along with their normal feed.

Let us know if you have any luck with it. It's good to have you back!

Where do you get your dorkings? Which ones do you have? A friend of mine has been having a really hard time finding any. The only place she can find is a hatchery and they won't have any until Feb.

Gosh where didn't I get them *lol*
I realized up front the degradation of the breed over the last 50 years and took a shotgun approach. I traveled to TN for a red breeder trio from Sandhill lines, brought back eggs from Virginia when we drove to MD for our English Shephed, ordered silver greys from McMurray, and lastly ordered birds and eggs from Rudy Troxel. A LOT of this has been very disappointing with basically nothing of quality until the last red Troxel birds. At 5 months they are like little tanks -- just beautiful. I also ended up with some mediocre reds from Sandhill stock via VA and a really nice silver grey cock also from the breeder in VA.
I could probably put together a red trio from sandhill lines if your friend would like to pm me or contact me through the website in my sig.

I wouldn't recommend ordering from MMcM in February. I lost 1/2 of what they shipped to me. They were great about the refund, but its heartbreaking to have a box with dead chicks in it and more deaths over next couple of days. They said the chicks must have gotten chilled. I ordered 25 and ended up with 11.

CUTE! But they aren't Dorkings *lol* I'd say the weather is about as good as it gets today for receiving baby chicks. MIne actually arrived on a Monday. Not sure how that is possible :)
Good luck with the new brood!
