I haven't noticed because I've been gone all day every day this week. By the time I get home, they are all inside on their roosts and the pop door is closed. I have to use a pen light to collect eggs. That's when I always find Rose in the nest box. She hasn't seemed to be moody but then again I only see her in the mornings when I put out their feed and check their water. She's there with the rest of them, with her beak in a trough. She was there last night but when I checked this morning, there was no egg in the box where she was sleeping. I didn't try to get an egg out from under her last night so unless she laid her egg in a different nest box and then relocated due to pressure from the other hens, she didn't lay an egg yesterday.

It doesn't sound like she is broody. A broody hen will "scream" at you when you look in on her, puffing her feathers and giving you her most threatening stink eye. I bet she just likes the warmth and coziness of the box on cold nights. Sorry.

Well, if that's the case, then she is alright to stay there I guess. She is one of my favorites and I tend to spoil them. The first day I got her and her companions I was still installing some finishing touches on their run and it was hot. I sat down to cool off and the next thing I knew she sat down beside me on the steps of the coop and let me pet her. She closed her eyes, stuck her head behind my back and starting cooing. I thought she was going to go to sleep, then I heard a tiny thunk sound. She had laid an egg right there beside me as I petted her. My first egg courtesy of Rose the RIR.

LOL! She sounds rotten already! The only thing you might want to do is to put a cardboard box or other liner in that nest box. If she is sleeping in there she will poop in there as well. That is why most people discourage them sleeping in the nests. It makes for dirty eggs.

I've got the next three days off so I'm going to try to scope out what she's doing a few times during the day to make sure she isn't semi-broody or anything.

Hello fellow Alabamians, Dixons Mills area here! Still just mostly watching the forum and researching why my chickens eyes are being pecked...and why I have no eggs yet (guess I'm the impatient kind). Glad to see others close to home!

400

(Thinking a male) He had signs of being pecked, with it being very bloody yesterday. If he is male, this now means I have a total of 3 roosters in one pen. Sizing of pen is 8ft X 22ft, with a total of 17 in there. Feed consisting of cracked corn and laying pellets along with lettuce, oranges and bread occasionally. Also, will give them oyster shell.
