ALABAMA!!

How do you keep the water in the chicken waterer from getting all stinky I change them out every day but still gets nasty???

I solved so many problems by making my own waterer with a free five gallon bucket from a Chinese restaurant and a set of four chicken nipples from Tractor Supply Company for $5! You simply drill four holes in the bottom of the bucket (I didn't have the right sized drill bit, so I just used a slightly smaller one and rolled it around until it was big enough) then you simply screw in the nipples, and hang the bucket! I'm a big promoter of the unfiltered Apple cider vinegar added, 1 Tbsp per gallon of water. It keeps algae from growing and is so healthy for the birds! You put the lid on the bucket but leave it slightly cracked. I have to fill the waterer so much less now and it never gets dirty! Total cost= $5! My 15 8-week olds can drink on it for a week.

Good to know! Must try this!

...One man's trash.......

Congrats! You got what you wanted for it and he got what he considered a bargain! Both are happy, that's a good deal!

I took my son's on a covert mission after dark last night. We went dumpster diving. That is not something I would do, normally, but I was at the hardware store yesterday and noticed that they had thrown away several partial rolls of hardware cloth and rabbit wire.

Score!!!!

Nice one!

you're right on the one man's trash thing. i guess i underestimated the value. funny side note: the guy asked my wife if she was "getting out of the chicken business" and she pointed to my new coop about 4ft away and told him "no, we're just getting started!" the guy said "WOW, i looked right at that and had no idea it was a chicken coop". maybe i should list that coop for $800-900. (hahahah, i only have about $30 in the new one)

Not everyone has the vision or resources to make coops from scrap

My very first chicken coop was made from an old outhouse! It held 4hens. I nailed wood over the holes, and that's where the nest boxes went. Put a screen door on the front for ventilation. At night the wooden door was closed. I let them free range during the day. They seemed to like their little coop potty. At least they never complained! And it didn't stink either!

What an awesome idea! I'm going to try making one. Any trouble with it leaking around the nipples? Do you remember what size drill bit????

It had a built-in rubber washer that once I tightened them up enough, it didn't leak at all! If I did you could always use plumbers tape or carefully apply silicone. They called for something crazy like 9/32" or something in the 32nds and my BF just had a standard set. So he took the nipple and just held it up to them and picked the one slightly smaller than the part you screw in. I just kept widening it until it fit. Definitely would rather it be too small than too big! There's a few different ones available online, but once I found that TSC had them, I went the free shipping route of me going pick them up :) It was really simple and I'm so happy with it! Gonna make another soon. You can really use just about any container, even an apple juice bottle, just gotta have that crack at the top to let in air. You could just poke a hole in the top of something I'm sure.
