howdy and welcome bexb. I kinda know the feeling, got my 1st eggs friday

It is so much fun and so much work at the same time. But i wouldnt trade it for anything. I never thought I would enjoy chickens as much as I do now. We are working on a 2nd coop, just for teens because I have the one hatch, and there are 4 more sitting ready to go in the next week.I want them to have a safe place when mommy kicks them to the curb.this is only my 3rd generation of babies.but I'm excited

dragonfly i also used metal roofing around the bottom of my run and on the back bottom of the coop and left the ends open and covered with wire also put a single strand oe electric fence around the entire perimitere (sorry for the misspelling) also have plans to put a strand around the top of the run to help with cats that might try to climb the wire

Thanks! I'm glad I could help! Everyone has been so helpful and friendly to be on here so I try to do the same! I'll take a pic of the door once I clear all the stuff from in front of the coop :)

Since I seen yours I am going to put metal roofing around mine . I want to keep my babies safe thanks for help :)) I can't wait to see the rest of your pictures

I haven't been a member long but I am so happy I am now :) the members have helped me so much and it's nice chatting with friends that love chickens :) I can't wait to have my first newborns I have 9 now but they are just 1 month and a week old so I have to wait awhile to be a Grammy lol

I made a "safe zone" for my little ones for when I put them in with the adults.  I used some scrap wire fencing (2x4) to give them a place where they could get into but the spaces were too little for the grown birds.  I keep chick starter and water inside the area (far enough from the wire that the adults can't reach it through the wire) so they know where to eat and drink and they venture out on their own.  The adults will peck and chase them for a while, but soon everyone will be used to the new arrangement and will ignore each other.

For now I have them in a crate sperated. The babies are up by the house so I can check on them more frequently.
My chickens are free range in our back yard with just a 8ft-2ft housing area with nesting box and feeders where I put them up at night. Should I make a space in there for the babies?

i use a big transport cage in the coop at night and take it out during the day the younger ones roam around inside the coop and they can go out in the run if they want too i use the cage as a safe zone at night

I'll try this out! Thank you!!!

Awesome! Congrats and welcome back.

well, i think my cross beaked chicken heard me talking about culling her. she's the same age as my barred rock that started laying 4 months ago but i figured she didn't develop right with the cross beak and that she would never lay eggs. well i went to go get my barred rock's egg yesterday and there was a bright blue egg in there to my surprise. i know my 6 new hens aren't old enough to lay and that they wouldn't lay a blue egg anyways... so i went in the run and sure enough that cross beak hen squatted for me when i put my hand over her. i guess she is starting to earn her keep. she's 11 months old... isn't that a LONG time to start laying?

Biga, the main problem I've seen with cross beaked birds is that they can't get enough to eat to support proper growth, energy, and reproduction. Many never lay. She must be coping better than most. I wouldn't worry about how long it took, just whether or not she is eating enough and if it is worth it to you to help. I have vowed never to raise another, they become very dependent and tug on your heartstrings to much. They become regarded with affection and the ends are just too sad.

You're very welcome! I'm glad I could help. My boyfriend's dad had that idea. I was afraid it wouldn't be breezy enough like that, but it's nice and cool in there!
