Does anyone know if these are lice eggs? Just noticed yesterday & they are only around their necks. Inspected all of them & do not see any signs of bugs, mites, etc... Put a lot of DE in the coop. Not sure what the next step is since I'm not sure if lice or not.

Oooooo, looks like it could be. Most that I've seen in pictures, and once in person on a friends birds, were smaller and in clusters on the base of the feathers next to the skin. If you pinch them between your fingers, are they wet and viscous inside? I don't know how you feel about pesticides, but if that were my bird, I would be powdering my flock's bottoms with some SEVIN dust!

That's the weird thing, they aren't in clusters like all the pics I've seen. Was wondering if it might be some type of fungal infection or something. Will try to squeeze & tell you what it feels like.

Thanks!

Wisher, tried squishing the "eggs" & they really don't squish. They just seem hard. Today there seems to be more. Going to get some sevin & try. I read where u can put the sevin in a garbage bag & put the chicken in the bag with their heads out, is that how you would apply? Also, what about treating the coop? Just started deep litter method about 2 weeks ago, so do I need to get rid of all my clean litter??
What about using DE & garlic also?

I don't know about DE and garlic. Here is how I use SEVIN. I have a small coffee can and an old tube sock. I put the sock in the can and then spread the top of the sock out and stretch it over the top of the can, so that it is open wide and I can pour the SEVIN into the sock. I use about a cup or cup-and-a-half in the sock and seal the SEVIN bag up well. I only buy the small bags, maybe 5lbs? That size lasts me "FOR EVER," seriously, for years. It seems to lose some of it's strength if it's not sealed well. I then put an oven bag tie around the top of the sock just above the SEVIN and use it like a powder puff. I like to have a helper hold the bird while I lift wings and tail and rub the feathers back, but if I am doing it by myself, I will hold them by their feet and powder them good and quick. Around the vent, under each wing, back of the neck, and I'm done. I put a little in the nest boxes under the shavings, and every so often, I mix up liquid SEVIN in a pump sprayer and spray the walls and roosts down good and let it dry while the birds are out free-ranging for the day. I have never had a problem with lice, mites, etc. and I have never had it bother adult birds or chicks. I try not to breath it, but I don't wear a mask or gloves (I know I should!) I use the same sock over and over and store it in the coffe can in the feed room. If the sock gets a hole in it or too clogged to use, I throw it away and get another.

On the litter, I would rake it to one side, and use a cup and a strainer (I have a fine mesh wire one with a wooden handle) to sprinkle a fine dust on the floor under the shavings. Then, pull the shavings over the dusted area and expose the other side. The dust will work as well from underneath as long as the shavings are not too deep. If they are more than about 5 or 6 inches deep, sprinkle just a little on top after you put it on the bottom and stir it in a bit. It really doesn't take much.

Out of our 10 hens, 3 are broody. The one that has been broody the longest has been on her nest for 20.5 days. I am checking outside several times today hoping to see some baby chicks soon!
