ALABAMA!!

I thought for a split second about driving to another store, but I wasn't going to risk some wild goose.. er.. chick chase for nothing. Just glad with what I have and I'm just going to order some chicks come September. I really need to lay off the chicks anyway... I mean, I'm 33 weeks along, I *really* need to start considering that

Don't want to spend a few days in the hospital with a bin of chicks left at home.
Yeah then that feeling of how you forgot something when you have to take a trip.. well unfortunately it would be true! I wouldn't want to have little chicks and a new baby at the same time that's for sure. I don't know if it's just that there's only 6 vs my initial 18 chicks but these from the TSC don't seem to be as active or as big of eaters as the others were at this age.

I'm glad my current bunch is growing FAST. One of the barred rocks is growing tail feathers and already has fullblown wings at a week old.

It's too funny, I have a heat plate in there and from day one they've been jumping off and flapping. One of the white rocks flapped all the way to the other side of the brooder yesterday

Sometimes they act like popcorn and all pop up and down, flapping like crazy. It's funny, these chicks act WAY different than the bunch I had last year.. I really think it's the heat plate and the fact that they're elevated and have a side opening (they can see us!). They start cheeping like mad when I walk out the room.

My chick has this stuff on its butt. Is it pastey butt or the umbilical cord? It just pooped so whatever it is isn't blocking that.
That looks kind of like how my chicks did with dried poop. It wasn't covering their vent either but I figured if I didn't clean it then it would build up and block it. I had a couple of super busy days after getting 6 from TSC and theirs pasted up quickly and was hard to remove with the warm wet washcloth like my first batch I ordered. I ended up soaking their rumps in the sink to soften it up easier before cleaning.

Some of mine did that but after I gave them some grit they did not get it any more. Also I applied some vaseline with a Q-tip to help.

I didn't give the little ones grit but did rub olive oil on their bums. I don't have vaseline. My 4weekers think grit is candy and haven't liked a single treat I've tried to give them yet! The males are rougher with snatching it up out of my hand.

My chicks are not a week old and I give them grit. If they were outside with the hen she would have them eating it to help them digest their food.
Olive oil will help.

Bessemer has barred rocks pullets? Since we are headed up that way tomorrow, I may have to see if I can talk my hubby into another 6...ideas ideas.

They had barred rock pullets last week. I'm not sure about this week. When I asked over the phone what they had, they said RIR, Cornish X and mixed pullets. I asked if the pullets were all different colors (mixed... right?) and they said yes. I got down there and they all looked exactly like Barred Rocks! So when they told me mixed pullets again today I didn't ask any further about them. Earlier today they said they had Red Pullets, Cornish X, and Mixed Pullets.
