ALABAMA!!

Hello everyone! :) My name is Jess, and my fiancé and I are from Madison, just over the Limestone County border. As of now, we do not have any chickens, but are looking to get our first set soon. Anyone have any suggestions for good breeds for the heat of Alabama? Good egg layers? Good personalities?

Thank you guys! Look forward to chattin' with y'all! :woot

I LOVE. Orpingtons! Great personalities! Also silkies.

I personally like white rocks. It seems crazy that there's differences between chicken colors, but with certain breeds there really is. Partridge plymouth rocks are evil.. I'm guessing there was a lot of breeding to get that color. White rocks are sweet, productive, suprisingly good moms even if they dont go broody that often, reasonable on feed, pretty quiet, calm.

I hate production reds. They're noisy, naggy, bossy.... Not my bird.

Australorps are good producers, but can be rather loud, in my experience. And they seem bothered by the heat.. They're very flooffy birds.

Those are my main breeds.

Hi! and welcome to BYC and the ALABAMA!! thread. We are glad you joined us. If you have never had chickens before here is my advice. Build and finish your coop before you get the birds, plan for twice the number you think you will EVER want, and understand that everything will try to eat your chickens, so plan accordingly (strong coop.) There's more, but that will get you started.

Big coop. Yes. And a fenced in run. Free-ranging is a nice idea, but generally doesn't work out, atleast not for the whole day.

I've got no experience with Silkies.. do they not get hot? They seems so fluffy.

My silkies have no problem with the heat, and while they aren't wild about cold, they manage just fine. They don't tolerate being pecked or hit on the head though. The skull is very fragile, and a hard peck from another chicken can kill them. Happened to my roo. As far as where to get them, you can either order them from the hatchery, or else keep eyes and ears open for people selling them. I'm not sure where DH got mine. I just have one hen left, and her chick,. He's all grown up, and she has quit laying, but I really like her, so she's safe from freezer camp. And he's such a sweetie, I just can't let him go. I love my little Butchy and Belinda.

@Crickett Do you know where I could get a silkie hen I would really like one!
Not sure where you live but I picked up some silkies at a Flea market in Florence, AL a couple of weeks ago. They guy swears the ones I picked up are hens but I think he was making it up and really do not know what the sex are.

I do have a 3 months old white cockerel for sale.

I'm a little far from Florence. I think aim going to go to wren in Mississippi to the flee market there. My uncle got some beautiful coronation Sussex there a couple weeks ago!

Hey Orps,
Where was the Flea Market you were at here in Florence? How often do you get up here to Florence?
I would love to get a couple of your Blue Orps sometime or eggs. I only have 1 left and those are my favorite. I got 6 eggs from Miss Prissy about 5 years ago and all 6 hatched. I haven't found anyone else around here that has any. Would love to work out a trade or something. I got Silkies also. Been hatching them for the last couple months under some broodys.
I need to find some more Coturnix also to mix in with the 12 I have.

Jayare
