ALABAMA!!

Having prob figuring out what I want as far as a coop. I don't want to go too big, only about 4 for now. But, I'd like the ability to expand when the day comes. Any ideas?

Thanks for the welcome. We're thinking 2 barred rocks, 2 astralorps and then 2 more of a third breed. We may just go for barred rocks and astralorps. Open to suggestions on the third breed. Or alternatives. We're new to this. A friend of ours has a barred rock and I think it's too cool.

I've got barred rocks, white rocks, partridge rocks, production reds, australorps and some mixed birds (marans-ey...). I like the white rocks a lot, the reds are good too, both produce well and get along nicely with the australorps and barred rocks. Marans are a bit of an issue because they have the feathered feet and my birds feel the need to 'fix' anything that's unusual on another birds.

A lady from Jemison made a nice hoop coop out of cattle panels. In our climate open is a good thing... One closed wall as a windbreak. I have a partially closed coop, 1 full wall, 2 half walls, wire on the rest. Heat is far harder on them than cold. Build bigger than you think you need... you're going to end up with more than you think. I started wanting 8-10 birds... I'm double that throughout the year.

this is my new coop. Its 4x8 ft by 4 ft tall. It is 3 ft off the ground on 4x4 posts. It was easy to build and inexpensive

Hee hee hee... isn't that that the truth. I ONLY wanted 2. I have 8 running around. BUT...(the big but) 1 is a roo that will need a new home when he start crowing and 4 are chicks so they don't count. So TECHNICALLY I only have 3. And that is chicken math for you!!

Lance - How about an 8x8 covered structure, open wire on the front (southern facing,) solid walls on the other three sides, Poop Board and roost along the back wall with food, water, and nest boxes underneath. This would hold six comfortably, especially if you free range some. Then, you could expand by adding an 8x10 run off one side for a couple more, or an 8x20 added run and it would house 16 large fowl easily. You're going to need that much room, I promise, ever heard of "chicken math?"

Hey all, I'm in Decatur and trying to rehome some roosters. I have 3 easter egger bantams and 6 (ish) full sized guys of varying colors (one of them is really beautiful). I really don't want to cull them if I can help it, but I'm in town so I don't want to push my luck with crowing.
