Hi - I'm new to this site and to chickens. I live around Eclectic, Alabama, near Real Island. I just bought two black cochins and two Polish. I want to do the organic thing with my eggs, so I'm researching that and I would also like to exhibit my birds. Does anyone around here do that?

Welcome, paliminopup! I'm kind of new to the chicken world myself, but the folks on this forum are some of the nicest and most helpful anywhere.

I just have regular chickens, so I wouldn't know a thing about exhibiting. I do know there's an Alabama Egg Festival in the spring, I think. There might be a website for you to look at.

Good luck with your chicks!

Hi palominopup,

Welcome!

We're down here in south Alabama on the coast. I, too, am very new to both chickens and this forum. I've found so much help just reading everyone's posts that I have a little bit more confidence in taking care of my flock than I had when I first got my babies. All I have are regular breed chicks from the feed store and they are 6 weeks old so I have a long way to go. We, also, want to try staying organic with chickens and our eggs. We don't intend to use our birds for meat, just eggs. And when they stop laying, I guess we'll take care of them as if they are pets. Of course, they're still only chicks!

Hi Palominopup! and
welcome-byc.gif
There is a chicken and egg festival in moulton every spring. It's great fun! I don't know how you would go about showing there though. You may also want to check into the state or county fairs around. They have chicken judging as well. As for organic, my own chickens free range all day long. Although I do feed them packaged feed at night time. It's non-medicated, but I don't know if it's all organic. You can always raise your own garden and give them the scraps if you like. Chickens love fresh veg! They will also eat fish as well! Hope this helps!

Wonder why they call it a chicken and egg festival - if there are no to show, buy, sell, etc.

So, is anyone around the Wetumpka/Eclectic area?

There is supposd to be a huge chicken auction in Central, Alabama, only about ten miles from my house and I just wondered if anyone knew anything about it.

Anybody know if it is standard pratice to charge admission to livestock auctions? I went to one a couple of months ago and they wanted $10 ea for me and DH. I just turned right around and left.
But I had driven about 50 mi. to get there.
