I guess it really depends on the quailty of Rhode Island Reds. I hear people all the time that mention they would love to have some really good dark ones. There aren't near as many "quality" reds out there as there are productions. True dominiques are also a pretty good seller.

I agree, if i'm selling chickens, people want to know if they're rhode island red or dominique, or leghorn , very rarely do they ask for any other kind. They usually say, "that's what we had when I was a kid". LOL, but when they get here, theyll say, Oh, what kind of chicken is THAT? I really like that one, it's pretty.

kasey08,

Rhode Island reds are our best sellers. People in our area want a good dual purpose bird, and that's what they get with RIR's. Welsummers, Barred Rock, Dominiques, and Ameraucanas are popular too.

If you want to sell to people in town, you might want to consider an easily identifiable sex link cross. Then you could sell to people who want pullets only because they're not allowed to have roosters in their neighborhood. Red Stars and Golden Comets are great layers and they lay straight through the winter too.

Hi Lisa,
I'd be interested, if i'm not at a horse show. On the npip thing, I would call the local vet, or the poultry guy at auburn to find out exactly what you need to do.
Lisa
